Horecatrends | Tips for Culinary videos worth watching – week 11

11-3-2019

YouTube has been a source of inspiration for spotting trends past few years. Every day, thousands of movies are uploaded with new and interesting content. We too sometimes use videos as a source of inspiration to write about. With this week again a selection of videos which Demi Poppe thinks are worth it to watch.

This week a video about Mberry, that deceives your taste buds and a video about the ‘amenities war’ between hotels. Finally, a video about a certain variety of a strawberry from Japan, the ‘white jewel’, very unique and very expensive!

The amenities war of hotels | Everything for the hotel experience

This video shows the amenities war between hotels that is already going on since last century. Hotels do everything to make the hotel experience as good as possible for their guests. A nice overview of the developments in this area and even a bit of history about the amenities. Thomas Flight even mentions amenities that we don’t see as amenities anymore.

We wrote already about a few examples of amenities in hotel rooms. A nice example is free sanitary napkins and tampons in the ladies’ room and sustainability is getting more and more important, especially in the bathroom amenities. We wrote about the sustainable nohbo drops.

The white jewel | The Japanese white strawberries that are worth their weight in gold

Ever heard of white strawberries? Not me in any case. If you see them you would think they are not ripe. However, this is the opposite! I came across a video from a grower from Japan who is the only one who grows these ‘white jewels’.

There are a total of 15 different varieties of white strawberries of which the pineberry is known in Europe. My colleagues already wrote an article about pineberries in 2010. This type of strawberry is still cultivated in Dutch greenhouses and is only available on a limited basis. However, this strawberry is not so extremely large compared to the ‘white jewel’, also called ‘Shiroi Houseki’. This strawberry is a cross bed and ripens with very little sunlight which makes in logical that they are so white. Only 10% of all strawberries harvested by the grower have this colour after exposure to a limited number of sun hours. Which is why these strawberries are so expensive. They are often sold per unit and cost around 20 euros.

The strawberry symbolizes status and is often given as a gift in Japan. This strawberry is mainly described as juicy, large and soft. So if you are visiting Japan, this is definitely worth a try!

Mberry | A tablet that deceives your taste buds

In the video you can see how a tablet made of magical fruit that comes from West Africa can trick your taste experience. The fruit contains glycoprotein that changes your taste perception. So you can just eat a lemon without sitting with a long face, and even better; it will taste delicious as well! In addition, this tablet can be used for diabetics to regulate their sugar intake and chemotherapy patients who are influenced by a metallic taste of the treatment.

My former colleague, Bram Kosterink, already wrote an article about this magical fruit in 2015. It remains fascinating to see how such a fruit can completely change your taste experience!
