At horecatrends.com we spot many national and international trends on a daily basis. We pick the most interesting ones to write about, the other trends we use in our weekly column ‘Trends we spotted this week’.

With links this week to articles including an initiative by DoubleTree by Hilton in Amsterdam that allows people to give away 100 litres of water per hotel stay. They have also used advanced Orbisk technology, powered by AI, to reduce thousands of kilos of food waste.

For the first time, there is now also a list of ‘The World’s 50 Best Hotels’ and Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel is launching a Gouden Brood’ beer, a sustainable beer concept made from leftover bread from their kitchens.

Bijou Patisserie in Dubai is serving ‘Le Goûter Vault’: high tea from a jewellery vault. And in Venlo, the Daily Trade Fair Venlo has opened, over 15,000 square metres of exhibition floor with showrooms and a culinary stage!

McDonald’s Japan has added ‘Shrimp Nuggets’ to its menu, we think that many people in the Netherlands would like this menu item as well! At the Horecava, you can check out the pop-up of BUNKR, the first AI-controlled restaurant in the Netherlands.

New owner for tea and spice shop De Droom van Utrecht’. It’s the fourth business of Dineke and Marc van Bommel now. They operate two Betjeman & Barton shops selling tea (accessories), crockery and delicacies in The Hague and one in Amsterdam.

And on Instagram, we came across a cool way to serve burrata – a burrata bar!

Hotel guests donate 5 million litres of water to developing countries thanks to a social initiative

Hotel guests at DoubleTree by Hilton in Amsterdam have donated five million litres of water to families in developing countries in collaboration with the social initiative ‘Enjoy Water to Give Water’. This initiative allows guests to give away 100 litres of water per hotel stay, making guests more aware of the value of water. Via a QR code, guests can choose the project where their donated water goes. This collaboration not only saved water in the hotel, but also helped in developing countries!

Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel makes its own beer from leftover bread

Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel launches ‘Gouden Brood’, a sustainable beer concept made from leftover bread from their kitchens. The initiative aims to reduce food waste and promote sustainability. The beer will be available from the end of September in the hotel at Schiphol. The beer was created for a sustainability competition within Marriott Hotels and won! The use of old bread, which partly replaces the traditional ingredient barley malt, gives the beer a unique taste!

McDonald’s Japan adds shrimp nuggets to its menu

A simple but delicious idea! McDonald’s Japan adds Shrimp Nuggets to the menu. These are based on the popular Chicken McNuggets, but instead of chicken they are made from shrimp. Check out the Instagram post below.

Opening Daily Trade Fair Venlo

Last weekend, the Daily Trade Fair Venlo’ festively opened as an inspiration platform for professionals in the hospitality and interior design industry. The initiative is already supported by 120 ambassadors who were all present to represent their company or brand. Daily Trade Fair Venlo, with its 15,000-square-metre exhibition floor with showrooms and a culinary stage, offers a varied range of various exhibitors with products and services aimed at the professional in the hospitality and interior industry. Not only does Daily Trade Fair Venlo offer unique purchasing opportunities, it is also a meeting place of, for and by professionals. The venue is open 350 days a year. Hilton Amsterdam Central Station reduces thousands of kilos of food waste with innovative AI

Using the advanced Orbisk technology powered by AI, DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Central Station has reduced thousands of kilos of food waste in the hotel’s restaurants and buffets over the past year. It’s made of a pillar with photo equipment and the machine can immediately measure how much food is thrown away. This allows the hotel to respond to the guest’s eating behavior. In addition to this initiative, the hotel donates soup from unused fresh products to local institutions, and buys vegetables that have not been auctioned to use for their recipes.

New owner for tea and spice shop ‘De Droom van Utrecht’

Dineke and Marc van Bommel are the new owners of ‘De Droom van Utrecht’ (the dream of Utrecht), a tea and spice shop at Schoutenstraat 6 in Utrecht. The store reopened on September 19, 2023. The new owners will retain the familiar range of spices, herbs, tea, tableware and local products, and they will also add their own BOMMEL & BOMMEL delicacies and tableware. De Droom van Utrecht is the fourth store of the Van Bommel couple, who also operate two Betjeman & Barton stores in The Hague and a store in Amsterdam.
