Although the official birth certificate of Maison GAUTIER dates back to 1755, following the founding charter signed by King Louis XV, the story of the House actually began a century earlier, in 1644. Charles Gautier, son of an oak merchant from the Tronçais forest, married Jacquette Brochet, daughter of a winegrower. From the meeting of viticultural expertise and oak craftsmanship, a new passion was born: the art of cognac-making. Over the generations, the House continued to grow, and in 1890 the family decided to settle in a former water mill on the Osme River, in the small village of Aigre. An article about their new face with recipes to different cocktails with their cognac!

Cognac by Maison GAUTIER is part of the Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits and introduces a new design

Today, Cognac GAUTIER is part of the MBWS group (Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits). In line with the brand’s evolution, Maison GAUTIER is introducing a new design for its VS and VSOP cognacs.

This more premium look is part of a broader strategy to further strengthen the brand, featuring cleaner and more contemporary lines that highlight the elegance, tradition, and unique identity of Maison GAUTIER.

The Osme River and the Chai Paradis

Housed in a former water mill, Maison GAUTIER benefits from the unique humid environment created by the Osme River, which flows beneath the cellars. This distinctive setting influences both the ageing of the eaux-de-vie and the so-called ‘angel’s share’.

The Chai Paradis is one of the House’s most important spaces, both historically and as a source of inspiration for creating its finest blends. To enter this cellar, eaux-de-vie must be at least 25 years old. They then continue ageing for many more years, depending on the desired result, either in barrels or glass demijohns.

Generations of cellar masters have passed down their passion and craftsmanship here. Since 2022, this expertise has been entrusted to cellar master Guillaume Archereau. With his unique knowledge, this Charente native plays a key role in preserving the soul and heritage of Maison GAUTIER. He maintains close relationships with many players in the cognac world, including distillers, coopers, and winegrowers.

This close collaboration ensures consistent quality of the eaux-de-vie and a deep understanding of their ageing process in the cellars after 2, 10, or even 50 years.

They are selling the GAUTIER VS (40%) which is fruity and elegant, a blend of eaux-de-vie aged in oak barrels for a minimum of two years, sourced from two terroirs: Fins Bois and Bons Bois. A harmonious cognac offering aromas of white peach, enhanced by a hint of vanilla and mineral notes.

The GAUTIER VSOP (40%) is generous and harmonious in taste. Among its wide collection of cognacs, the VSOP is an essential classic. It is crafted from a blend of eaux-de-vie aged for at least five years, sourced from Petite Champagne, Fins Bois, and Bons Bois crus. This cognac, with its assertive character, reveals a generous aromatic palette of honey, fig, and vanilla, particularly appreciated by cognac lovers.

Most recently we spotted a cocktail creator who has cognac as ingredient to develop new cocktails this year. GAUTIER offers divers cocktail recipes on their website for example their GAUTIER VS French Mule and their GAUTIER VSOP French Daisy.

To celebrate 270 years of heritage, Maison GAUTIER has created an exceptional cuvée reserved for its best clients around the world. Crafted from a rare eau-de-vie from the Petite Champagne cru, carefully selected from the Chai Paradis, this edition has benefited from over 30 years of ageing. This cask-strength cognac reveals a deep amber color, an elegant nose of rancio with subtle woody notes. On the palate, the balance is delicate, combining sweet spices, candied fruits, and refined esters. A cognac to be shared during an authentic and convivial moment, ideally as a digestif.
