Horecatrends | Tips for Culinary videos worth watching – week 7

14-2-2019

YouTube has been a source of inspiration for spotting trends past few years. Every day, thousands of movies are uploaded with new and interesting content. We too sometimes use videos as a source of inspiration to write about. With this week again a selection of videos which Vera Rauwerda thinks are cool to watch.  Among other things, a video about 22 sustainable initiatives for a cleaner world, the reason why koi fish are so expensive and several facts about salmon that you didn’t know!

22 initiatives for a better world!

The video shows 22 initiatives that contribute to a cleaner world. I do not have to explain how important such initiatives are. Every year, a lot of plastic and other waste ends up in the sea. In the video we see various solutions in order to clean the oceans and make them plastic- and waste-free. We also see various initiatives in the video about generating energy in a sustainable way. Both in the water as with the help of compost. In addition, they show various initiatives regarding the reduction of waste. For example Nohbo Drops (a sustainable alternative to bottles), we already wrote about those a few months ago.

Why are koi fish so expensive?

The most expensive koi fish is 1.8 million dollars. Koi fish are nowadays one of the most expensive pet fish in the world. But why? Koi fish are originally raised in Japan. Rice farmers first began breeding koi fish in 1700, mainly because of their distinctive colours and patterns. There are regular competitions to determine the best and most beautiful koi fish. In the video, a Dutch seller and hobbyist of koi fish explains why he travels to Japan every year to buy them. The video also explains how koi fish have such distinctive colours and patterns. Watch the video to find out how this is possible!

What you never knew about salmon!

In general, salmon is very good for you. One of the reasons is the fact that omega 3 is present, which seems to be good for your skin and reduces the risk of heart disease. But what is the difference between wild salmon and farmed salmon? That can be seen in this video!

For example, farmed salmon is slightly cheaper than wild salmon. In contrast, wild salmon is qualitatively better in taste and nutrients.

Since 2015 it has been allowed by the FDA to make genetically modified salmon. This salmon has a combination of DNA from different types of fish. As a result, this genetically manipulated salmon grows faster and bigger. Very interesting video!
