The French have their cognac, the Russians have their vodka and the Scots have their whisky. And Belgium? Gin(Jenever)! Jenever is therefore something typical for the ‘Low Countries’; the Netherlands and Belgium. Jenever comes across as ‘a popular trend’ to many and cannot match the premium image of cognac, gin or whiskey. But this is not right. The history of jenever or in English genever, goes back 500 years and reads like an exciting book. A history with many ‘up & downs’, in which the drink has fortunately always existed and in which the Belgian Filliers, a family distillery, has played an important role for 140 years. The Belgian distillery now markets the oldest and most exclusive grain genever, ‘Filliers Barrel Aged Genever’ 30 years old!

Kever Genever launches Kever 0.0% | What do you drink if you do not want to drink?

In 2016 we posted an article about Kever genever, the Amsterdam jenever (Dutch gin) brand. The brand wants to become the most innovative ‘jenever’ brand in the Netherlands. A first step in that direction is the introduction of the Kever 0.0% , ‘jenever’ without alcohol and therefore in line with the trend of conscious alcohol consumption. On May 10 2019, Kever started a crowdfunding campaign on the CrowdAboutNow platform. With this campaign they want to raise a minimum of € 100,000 up to a maximum of € 200,000 in order to be able to realize Kever 0.0%, but also to launch other high-profile Kever Genevers within 3 years. Meanwhile, 120% of their goal has been achieved and the crowdfunding still has 35 days to go!

Happy holidays | Christmas decorations 2018

We are in the dark days before Christmas, with real Dutch weather. A little bit of once or twice and mostly wind and rain. Time to create a ‘Christmassy’ restaurant! In September we always give an overview of what we have spotted in the previous Christmas period for inspiration. Below our colleague Max van Oeveren has made a list of small examples up to the great Christmas tree at Claridge’s Hotel in London and special Christmas decorations, as inspiration for hotels, restaurants, bars and of course for at home.

This week, amongst others about the Amsterdam Terraces Festival at the end of August in the Rembrandtpark during which the finish of the summer is celebrated. Next weekend the GinFever festival will be held in Schiedam and the Dutch coffee concept Kaldi opens its first branch in Denmark. By the Dutch | Medals at International competitions for these ‘Spirits with a Dutch heritage’

‘By the Dutch’ has recently received a number of important awards at various international competitions. They have won medals during the Gin Masters 2018, IWSC 2018 and Tastings.com 2018. The Batavia Arrack and Dry Gin even won gold. The ‘By the Dutch’ Old Genever was the only Dutch Jenever that won prizes at the Gin Masters 2018. read more

Wihayo, the traditional Korean receipt made with Dutch craftsmanship, is now available in the Netherlands. The premium distilled Soju is made from rice and contains a soft malty flavor. Wihayo is best to drink pure, but combines well in cocktails. The Wihayo produced in the Netherlands brings the best of two countries together: the age-old receipt from Korea and the Dutch expertise of distilling. The ingredients, a combination of fermented rice, grain, barley and natural sugars is tilled with a Dutch mill from 1785. Wihayo contains 19% alcohol. read more
