As National Bitterballen Day on March 27th approaches, Kwekkeboom is proud to introduce the very first ‘umami’ Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen, now available for both oven and air fryer use. This marks a plant-based innovation from the Oven & Airfryer division of the quintessentially Dutch brand. Starting from week 15, updated versions of the beef and veal bitterballen and croquettes will also be available. These new and improved bitterballen and croquettes feature an incredibly crispy crust and the most flavorful ragout.

Kwekkeboom Beef Bitterballen Rated Best in Test

Alongside the development of the Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen, there was brand-wide innovation across the existing product range. Thomas van Hemert, CEO of NewForrest Fingerfood which Kwekkeboom is a part of since last May, says, “We spent months testing in our own test kitchen, scrutinizing every ingredient. We sought out the best ingredients for our salpicon (the basis of the ragout) and added various herbs that make our bitterballen and croquettes so unique. This, combined with the crispiest, tastiest crust, completes the taste experience for us.” In short, these are perfected versions of the beloved bitterballen and croquettes. And a promising ‘ball’: the updated Kwekkeboom Beef Bitterballen came out on top in a taste test against all competitors.

Umami Flavor Explosion with Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen

A new star on the snack platter: the Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen. The development set high standards, and the result is unmistakable: the Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen are made with a mix of circularly produced oyster mushroom (including from Beefy Green), shiitake, cluster mushroom, and porcini, combined with shallots, thyme, and a hint of black garlic. This creates a flavorful ragout. The entirely plant-based bitterbal also has the same crispy crust as Kwekkeboom’s other bitterballen and croquettes. Biting into it, one is met with an umami flavor explosion.

Kwekkeboom aims to offer a broad and surprising palette of flavors with its range of premium oven and air fryer snack bites. The launches coincide with a redesign of all Kwekkeboom packaging, giving the brand a fresh look. Kwekkeboom is revitalizing the frozen food section of supermarkets with a quality and comprehensive assortment for every home entertainer. The Oyster Mushroom Bitterballen also make a tasty addition to vegetarian snack platters in restaurants.
