The G7 restaurant in Sittard (in the south of the Netherlands), located in the Gruizenkerkje (church) from 1634, has a new interior. With a mix of old church elements, modern comforts and international allure, is the interior unique for Sittard and matches the cooking level and ambitions of the owners Danny Meijers and Rik Opstals better.

Great idea to eat out in a church during the festive month of December, otherwise I’m sure too but the ambiance in the church is probably magical now. There are many more little churches where you can eat, like for example: Noor in Groningen, Bunk Amsterdam and Utrecht (you can also stay overnight here) and, for example, De Kleine Toren in Baarland and many more.

From brass chandelier to a simulated water stream

Claire and Robert Gijsen of GIJS & design in Sittard did the interior design. The church has room for 28 guests to enjoy gastronomic delights in a comfortable, warm and intimate interior. Host and sommelier Danny Meijers: “The interior is a beautiful combination of old church elements with the luxurious comfort of today. Eyecatchers are the authentic brass chandelier and the transparent curtains that divide the church into intimate compartments. The sleek modern bar is a great contrast to the monumental pulpit behind it. Above the pulpit is a simulated stream of water, in reference to the stream that used to run past the church. The built-in wine coolers, with their copper color, are also a reference to the church. So is the color wine red, which has been used in the upholstery, among other things. That color also refers to vegetables like beet and purple carrot from our own vegetable garden, which is one of the pillars of our restaurant.”

Culinary experience in restaurant G7 in Sittard

The culinary enthusiast can also expect more of an experience in the redesigned G7 restaurant. The aperitif and a first bite are served immediately upon entering at the bar, after which the guest goes to the table. Later in the evening, cheese lovers can choose their cheeses at the bar. The partners are very pleased with the new interior. Chef Rik Opstals: “Robert and Claire have done a great job. The restaurant radiates tranquility, feels warm and is even a little mysterious. The guests’ reactions are also very positive. The overall picture of high-level cuisine and a beautiful international interior in a church is, as far as we are concerned, unique for Sittard and its surroundings.”

Guests can choose from a menu of 10 or 14 creations. They offer a total experience including appetizers, amuse bouche and a little treat with the coffee. If the guest chooses 10 creations, the basis is a 5-course menu and 5 bites and amuses are included for the price of € 85 per person. With 14 creations, the basis is a 7-course menu and, in addition to bites and amuses, friandises are included. Both menus can also be ordered in a vegetarian version.

Heavenly dining with vegetables, herbs and flowers from their garden

The level of quality of restaurant G7 in Sittard has steadily increased in recent years and its ambitions reach even further. The culinary pillars of the kitchen are vegetables, herbs and flowers from their own vegetable and picking garden and sustainably made products from the region, with which surprising contemporary dishes are created. “We are proud of the origin of the products. We tell them at the table and mention it on the menu, which is made of recycled paper incorporating seeds of wild flowers that refer to our picking garden. Guests can let the seeds germinate at home for a colorful memento,” Rik Opstals tells.

European-oriented wine

G7 also looks close to home when it comes to drinks. A wine from Belgian Limburg is served as a sparkling aperitif, and the European-oriented wine list features around 20 wines from both Dutch and Belgian Limburg. 75% of the wines on the menu can be ordered by the glass, as they work with the Coravin system. Furthermore, they have a very nice non-alcoholic beverage arrangement. It includes vegetables, herbs and flowers that are also used in the accompanying dish.
