Dinner With The Queen | Culinary bee experience!
These days, more and more people are becoming aware that without bees there are no more bell peppers, raspberries or mustard. Each of those crops is only viable after pollination by a bee, and they are not the only ones! No less than three-quarters of all our vegetable crops only come into existence after pollination. As if that wasn’t enough, these brightly colored creatures are the creators of the so-called ‘nectar of the gods’: honey. With “Dinner With The Queen” organizer Gilles De Backer and chef Lieven Lootens pay tribute to the flowers and bees, especially the queen bee. You can reserve for a culinary bee experience from 17 June to 14 July on their website. Location: ‘Plukweide purfruit’ on the outskirts of East & West Flanders in Belgium: Dentergem, Oeselgem.

The culinary bee experience immerses guests from head to toe in the magical kingdom of the queen bee. For that, ‘Best Culinary Flower Chef Benelux’ Lieven Lootens, transforms his love for flowers into a sensory feast where unique taste palettes with floral and honey notes dominate. Guests are welcomed with a ‘Save The Queen’ Gin cocktail and are given a tour of the fruit vines of the ‘Plukweide’ (picking meadow) and visit the hives. Furthermore, the event consists of a 5-course menu Live Cooking on the Quan. They serve, among other things, ‘stuffed zucchini flower with Oosterschelde lobster and flower pollen’ and ‘citrusafrikaantjes & honey, hot smoked and lacquered wild salmon’. At the end of the dinner there will be flower tea and mignardises. Appropriate wines and infused waters are served with the dishes.

Gilles De Backer is the organizer, his company ‘Creative Mind Utopia Events’ creates events under the motto: ‘Those who don’t believe in magic will never find UTOPIA’. “From the organization of my first event I knew for sure that bringing people together and immersing them in unique experiences gives me incredible satisfaction. In the years that followed I realized that by organizing activities you are also a little bit of a conductor of the future. In this way you create unexpected encounters and memories that can determine people’ future lives. I would therefore like to continue to do this and not only making people aware of social themes but also encourage them to take action. I am happy to contribute to that.”
As chef, Lieven Lootens has already won several titles, including ‘Best Culinary Flower Award 2018’ and in 2011 his restaurant was the ‘Best Vegetable Restaurant’. “For me the goal in cooking is, with the utmost respect and the least noticeable movement, to bring out the best expression of the ingredient. Every season we search for the most beautiful products and we combine experience with new insights and techniques to create the most delicious dishes. Cook with your mind but above all with your heart, your feelings and your love; all indispensable ingredients for the tastiest dish.”
