McDonald’s Zwolle – De Lichtmis A28 has opened in the Netherlands

At exit 22 of the A28, McDonald’s Zwolle – De Lichtmis A28 has officially opened. The restaurant is located in the same building as the renovated roadside restaurant De Lichtmis, which reopened in November following the 2020 fire. The building gives both concepts their own space: McDonald’s serves quick, familiar favourites, while Wegrestaurant De Lichtmis welcomes guests with a spacious dining area and several function rooms. This way, travellers and visitors along the A28 have a versatile spot for a meal, a break, or a meeting.

Could conchas be the new croissant?

Conchas are Mexican sweet breads with patterned, shell-like tops that are growing in popularity in the US. Naturally Instagrammable, they’re perfect on their own or get creative with inspiring variations like crème brûlée or peanut butter & jelly. Check out some creative ways to enjoy and style conchas on Instagram. This video shows the making of traditional conchas!

New added sugar warnings through an icon for chain restaurants in New York City

On October 4, New York City became the first U.S. city to require chain restaurants to post an icon for items high in added sugars, joining existing salt and fat warnings. The measure highlights health risks like type 2 diabetes, weight gain, and tooth decay, helping diners make informed choices.

Meanwhile, California passed the Allergen Disclosure for Dining Experiences Act, requiring large chain restaurants (more than 20 restaurants) to list the “Top 9” allergens. In Europe, nutrition and allergen labelling has been mandatory for all restaurants since the end of 2014.

Crispy chili oil popular even in our Dutch traditional dish the ‘oliebol’

Since COVID-19, crispy chili oil has taken kitchens worldwide by storm. It feels like every household has a jar, and chefs are getting creative too, experimenting with flavors like fennel seed, anchovy, and even cocoa powder. Our favorite twist? A Dutch ‘oliebol’ (traditional eaten at New Year) filled with cheese and finished with a drizzle of crispy chili oil. Spotted at the Dutch ‘oliebollen’ stand: Oliebollen Oss.

Fans can enter to win a bottle on Lidl’s Instagram, until December 18th. Meanwhile, Lidl’s holiday meal deal, running Dec. 10–24 for under $4 per person, lets shoppers create a festive feast for 12. Perfect for spreading cheer without breaking the bank!

7-Eleven starts selling Japanese-style egg salad sandwich

7-Eleven is helping the ‘tamago sando’ gain popularity in the U.S. with its new Japanese-style egg salad sandwich. Inspired by Japan’s iconic convenience-store treat, it features soft milk bread filled with creamy egg salad made with KEWPIE Mayonnaise. Affectionately known as the ‘tamago sando’, this sandwich has long been celebrated online and in stores for its delicate flavors and comforting texture. In fact, we wrote about these Japanese sandwiches back in 2019 and since 2022 Ranchi is selling all kind of Japanese-style sando’s in Amsterdam. Now, American shoppers can enjoy a taste of Japan’s convenience-store culture—portable, creamy, and perfectly satisfying.

Remy Martin collaboration with Xue Song for Lunar New Year

Rémy Martin, the renowned French cognac house, is celebrating Lunar New Year with a limited-edition collaboration with Chinese artist Xue Song. The Rémy Martin XO x Xue Song gift set features the mythological Centaur leading a pack of horses. The detailed box, embossed in metallics against a vibrant red collage, opens to reveal the XO decanter and neck collar adorned with the golden Centaur and colorful artwork. Alongside the gift set, Rémy Martin is introducing a Year of the Horse Old Fashioned, offering a festive twist on the classic cocktail.

Ingredients: 1¾ oz Rémy Martin XO  /  1/3 oz Mandarin liquor  /  2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters  /  1 Cube brown sugar  /  Ice cube  /  Fresh mandarin wedge or dried/candied peel to garnish

Method: In a tumbler, muddle all the ingredients together, add ice cube and top with mandarin garnish.

Chinese New Year is an important pillar for cognac brands. In 2021, we wrote about a collaboration between Chinese artist Liu Wei and Hennessy, and over the years we have seen many such collaborations.
