All about the Japanese style sandwiches from Ranchi

Japanese sandwiches are originally made with Japanese bread shokupan but you can’t get it here. At Ranchi Amsterdam, the sandwiches are made from a square, brioche-like milk bread, which is baked especially for Ranchi. They currently have 6 different Japanese style sandwiches: the famous Egg Salad; Chicken Katsu with Bulldog Sauce; Chicken Salad with Pickled Daikon; Ton Katsu with Beemster Pork; Plant Based Chicken Katsu made of Tindle and a Tuna Japanese Style Sandwich. You can order them via Uber Eats or just pick them up at the Albert Cuypstraat 260! The sandwiches are priced between 8 and 13 euro.

How did you come up with the idea of selling these Japanese sandwiches in the Netherlands?

In 2019 we already wrote about the Japanese Style sandwiches of Konbi in Los Angeles that we had spotted via a video by Food Insider. Turns out the owners of Ranchi, brothers Sebastiaan and Christiaan Roosink, had also seen this video. Back then we wrote: “Who is going to sell these sandwiches in Amsterdam? We can’t wait to try them out!” So some of our team have already tasted the sandwiches from Ranchi several times!

Ranchi Amsterdam was founded autumn 2020 by the brothers Sebastiaan and Christiaan Roosink. Both with years of experience in the hospitality industry. Sebastiaan Roosink comments: “Actually, our business is a way to pass the time during the covid-lockdowns when we were at home because the hospitality industry was practically closed. We came across the Konbi LA video and we thought that these sandwiches were not yet available in Amsterdam and the lunch delivery market is less saturated than the evening market. We started to develop the recipes and the result we released to the world via an Instagram page. We were lucky enough to be picked up quickly by a number of influencers and that’s when the ball started rolling. It then took some time before enough orders came in that we could sort of make a living from it. In November 2021, we started our first pop up, which also gave us the opportunity to work with Uber Eats. At the beginning of this year, we started looking for an investor and a location, then we rebuilt the whole place ourselves”.
