More and more people are choosing binge sleeping, the sleep variant of binge watching, to catch up on sleep. A short afternoon nap, sufficient daylight and a quality mattress also play an important role in a good night’s rest, according to research by AccorHotels within the luxury segment. The hotel group lists the four largest sleeping trends of 2018 and gives some examples of how their individual hotels respond to this.

Binge Sleeping | Micro Napping

In addition to binge watching, watching one another of series, there is now also binge sleeping. This term refers to sleep sessions that can last for several hours. And micro napping stands for the short afternoon nap of about 20 minutes. We previously wrote about the Nap concepts such as ‘Pop & Rest‘ in London and ‘Nap York’ in New York. This remains an effective way to catch up on sleep and be more energetic and alert for the rest of the day. In addition, sufficient daylight is very important. People who spend time in daylight fall asleep earlier and sleep more than people who are mainly surrounded by artificial light, according to research. Hotels are therefore increasingly choosing sleeping solutions with light and smart technologies, such as sleep trackers like Dreem that keep track of sleep patterns and slightly adapted it to the biorhythm. Of course, a good mattress plays an important role in the quality of the night’s rest, according to research. Another study shows that an old and uncomfortable bed is one of the main causes of sleepless nights.

AccorHotels hotels are responding to these trends with sound-proof zones and soundproof rooms

AccorHotels has a number of smart solutions worldwide to help guests sleep as good as possible. For example, Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square offers soundproofed rooms and a ‘knock-free’ zone until noon to allow guests to sleep longer. For guests at the Sofitel Legend The Grand hotel in Amsterdam there is an extensive ‘sleep menu’ to choose from, from a relaxing herbal bath to a pillow designed for belly sleepers. At the Fairmont Mayakoba hotel, guests receive a handmade, traditional worry doll that – according to Mayan legends – removes their worries and clears the head. In 2016 we also wrote about the Omni hotel La Mansion Del Rio in downtown San Antonio, they also put a worry doll on the pillow at the turn down service. In order to promote guests’ night’s rest, MGallery by Sofitel is currently developing various stories at bedtime – from comic strips to poems and short stories such as at INK Hotel Amsterdam. The Pullman Paris Center – Bercy and the Pullman San Francisco Bay collaborate with the innovation company Rythm, which has won awards in the field of neurotechnology. They offer the Dreem to their guests, the first active sleep solution that has been clinically proven to work.
