Opening – Located in Amsterdam, where the Amstelveenseweg turns into Overtoom. Those visiting or living in Amsterdam can since recently visit Riot Restobar. A restobar with swagger where differences are embraced. And where the potato returns in all its glory in the dishes and drinks, such as in the house beer.

Riot Restobar | Homage to the Potato riot from WW1

At the Riot Restobar, people come together for Amsterdam ‘gezelligheid’ (conviviality). To dine elaborately or have a drink in a restobar where Amsterdam, is more like the vibrant Mokum. It is the raw edge that also tells the story behind the name Riot: a tribute to the Potato Riot from WWI, when Amsterdam was struggling with food shortages. Furious housewives of the Jordaan quarter got into a fight with the police when they claimed their share of the potatoes brought in, originally intended only for the army. The potato riot embodies the close relationship between Amsterdam and the potato, which has been used in Dutch cuisine for centuries and gets an upgrade in Riot. From stamppot to pommes Anna (with ‘Kemperhoen’-chicken and carrot cream).

Shared-dining, organic, 80/20 and sustainable

Riot Restobar is a shared-dining concept where creative chefs turn potatoes into real showstoppers. Of course there are potato croquettes on the menu, but also dishes like oeufs mayonnaise with potato roulade and chives or a croissant of potato with duxelles, broad beans, bundle mushrooms and walnuts. There are also plenty of other dishes to choose from, ‘sans potatoes’. All dishes and drinks are made with organic ingredients sourced from trusted, local suppliers. In doing so, the kitchen follows the 80/20 principle, meaning the chefs work mainly with vegetables, with occasionally sustainable and local fish and meat. It fits right in with Conscious Hotel Amsterdam City (The Tire Station), of which Riot is a part.

Meet and sleep | Location in the Conscious Hotel Amsterdam City

Riot Restobar is therefore not only a wonderful place for Amsterdam residents, but also for international (hotel) guests, creating a cozy mishmash with locals. And because of its location, there is the possibility to stay overnight in one of Conscious Hotel Amsterdam City’s comfortable rooms (The Tire Station) after a pleasant evening of dining or drinks. This makes Riot Restobar the ideal location for a (birthday) party. Of course, you can also have drinks with colleagues after a brainstorming session in one of the hotel’s meeting rooms or dinner with the whole family at the long table.

Besides Amsterdam swagger, you’ll find plenty of creativity and warmth in Riot Restobar. The feminine, rounded shapes are a tribute to feminine strength. Not just the one during the Potato Riot, but also the one of today. Riot’s interior consists mainly of recycled or upcycled furniture and materials, with playful, round shapes, feminine details and colourful graffiti. At Riot, everything comes together to create a restobar where everyone feels at home.
