Pleun’s Regenboogijsje (rainbow ice cream by Pleun) will have a special place on the exhibition floor at the Horeca Vakbeurs Hardenberg. Pleun’s Regenboogijsje is an ice cream that draws attention to Batten disease (CLN3). Pleun is a 9-year-old girl from Deventer who suffers from this rare metabolic disease. Trade fair organiser Easyfairs of the Horeca Vakbeurs is keen to help raise awareness of the disease and reach even more hospitality outlets by providing an exhibition space during the Horeca Vakbeurs on 29, 30 and 31 January 2024 at the event location – Evenementenhal Hardenberg.

Pleun’s  Regenboogijsje (Rainbow Ice Cream)

Pleun’s parents, owners of restaurant Meadow, have taken several initiatives to raise awareness and publicity about the disease and raise money for research. For every ice cream sold, 50 cents is donated to research and treatment. More than 75,000 ice creams have now been sold.

Together with ice cream expert Matthijs Maassen (Onwijs Lekker IJs), Pleun developed a tasty and responsible ice cream, with part of the proceeds going to medical research and treatment. Pleun got to choose the colours herself and naturally chose all the colours of the rainbow. Each ice cream is handmade from natural ingredients and is lactose- and gluten-free, among other things. Pleun’s Regenboogijsje | Raising awareness of childhood dementia

Children with Batten disease, also known as childhood dementia, seem to grow up normally but start experiencing sudden problems between the ages of 4 and 8. They slowly become visually impaired leading to blindness, develop epilepsy and have increasing difficulty moving, eating, talking and sleeping. Memory problems and behavioural changes occur, as do other physical failures such as psychosis, incontinence and heart failure. The disease gradually saps the body, children become bedridden and usually die between the ages of 15 and 25 from complications.

The foundation also sells Pleun’s Rainbow ice creams for in the Christmas tree.

Ambassadors Snelle and Go Ahead Eagles

The Dutch artist Snelle is one of Pleun’s friends who has committed himself as an ambassador to the ‘Voor Pleun’-Foundation. Together they make great memories and Snelle (Lars Bos) supports her parents where possible with actions around, for example, his performances, Go Ahead Eagles or even wrapping his own car in Pleun’s Rainbow Ice Cream car.
