IKEA Amsterdam has opened its completely renovated restaurant last week. It is the first IKEA store in the world to implement the new concept: a different set-up and new dishes should inspire customers even more to eat healthier and more sustainable food. For example, there are now various stations with, among other dishes, fresh smoothies and sandwiches. IKEA also serves dishes such as a salad with vegetarian balls. In the new format there is more room for contact between customers and employees of the IKEA restaurants as the dishes are prepared on the spot.

We’re curious whether dishes from the ‘IKEA SPACE10 Lab’ will be on the menu! We wrote about this initiative at the beginning of 2018, in which they told that they also investigated the possibilities of alternative ingredients such as algae and insects.

Sustainable materials and ingredients

The renovated restaurant in IKEA Amsterdam now presents even more dishes that are good for both people and the environment but IKEA remains loyal to low prices and its Swedish roots. New on the menu are for example flatbread with salmon, smoked salmon salad and vegetarian meatballs.  Sustainability also plays an important role in other aspects of the restaurant, such as the interior and the processing of waste. For example, natural materials, LED lighting, induction hobs and demand-driven extractor hoods have been chosen.

Healthy and sustainable restaurant concept for IKEA | The first in Amsterdam

In June, after a successful pilot in IKEA Utrecht, IKEA Amsterdam opened a coffee bar. In this cozy meeting place, professional baristas take care of delicious coffee and other drinks and snacks. IKEA is constantly researching and testing new concepts that respond to convenience and more service. The renewed restaurant – with 120 extra seats – and the coffee bar in IKEA Amsterdam are examples of this. IKEA Amsterdam also renovated the ground floor in 2018 to offer even more shopping pleasure and home inspiration. IKEA continues to invest in physical stores as the main meeting place for customers.
