La Cité du Vin: Wine theme park in in France

31-5-2016

In Bordeaux, France a new theme park will be opening on June 1st. In La Cité du Vin, which means “the city of wine”, both children and adults will have fun!

La Cité du Vin

The first idea of the La Cité du Vin project came up in 2009, seven years later the doors will finally open. La Cité du Vin gives a different view of wine, across the world, across the ages, across all cultures and all civilisations. The building itself is already quite impressive with more than 13.000m2 spread over ten levels and reaching a height of 55 metres. According to the website the architects “designed  a place filled with symbols of identity: the knotted vine stocks, wine turning in the glass, the swirls and eddies of the Garonne river”.

Enough things to do in La Cité du Vin. There are presentations, tastings, discovery workshops and there is a reading room with a unique collection of more than 1.200 wine-based works. Although the children are not allowed to drink yet, they do have the option to join workshops about wine labels and tasting-colour combinations.

One of the showpieces of the building is The Belverde. This room is on a height of 35 meters and has a unique panoramic view over Bordeaux at which guests can taste various glasses of wine from the very best wine regions of the world.

Hospitality, retail and events

Besides an extensive souvenir shop, there are also two establishments where visitors are able to relax for a moment. On the 7th floor there is a restaurant with (again) a panoramic view, serving a selection of seasonal regional produce, accompanied by a list of more than 500 wines from around the world. Not hungry but fancy a glass of wine? Make sure you stop by at Latitude20, a wine bar with more than 50 different wines by the glass and a selection of tapas from around the world and a worldwide wine cellar with more than 14,000 bottles from more than 80 wine producing countries.

The park will be open from tomorrow on and a ticket costs 20 euro. From the Netherlands the drive towards Bordeaux will take approximately ten hours but you will get enough in return. Tip: during the Euro Cup, Bordeaux’s new stadium will be hosting five matches for Euro 2016: 4 group matches and a quarter final. The occasion will be an opportunity to discover, present and taste wines from the countries taking part in the competition in Bordeaux.
