The greenest hotel in the Netherlands is currently being built in Amsterdam and is expected to open its doors in 2018. The innovative hotel is called Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam and is part of the WestCord Hotels group. The hotel will be built on the exact same spot where the passenger liner between Amsterdam and Jakarta used to depart from.

Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam

Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam was created after the city of Amsterdam announced a tender for the development of a hotel on Java Island as part of a redevelopment program in 2014. WestCord Hotels collaborated with the architectural firm SeARCH and the Tropenmuseum and Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, designing the winning hotel concept. Besides the architectural high-end design, the hotel stands out in sustainability and public programming. It will become a multicultural melting pot, as a vibrant part of the city. The cultural program of the hotel will be done in cooperation with the Tropenmuseum.

Modern-Asian

The ground floor of the hotel will be a large open space containing a restaurant with oyster bar, an espresso bar and wellness area with swimming pool. Guests of the hotel, neighborhood residents and locals are able to meet each other in the lobby which has modern-Asian influences. The hotel will also have a subtropical courtyard and the top floor of the hotel will accommodated the Skybar ‘Malabar’ with panoramic views of the IJ. The 200 boutique style rooms will consist of a construction of concrete and wood with Indonesian influences.

Sustainability

Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam is a spectacular building on the point of Java island with transparent glass facades and a unique 30 meter high wooden main bearing structure. Beams, columns, ceilings and frames are made of natural wood with FSC or PEFC quality mark. The chosen durable materials are of such quality that most walls and ceilings remain unfinished, leaving the solid woodworking system visible. Short life or non-recyclable materials are used as little as possible, almost all of the hotel elements can be reused by disassembly.

In addition, many energy-saving measures are taken, such as catching rainwater that can be used for spraying the courtyard. Through PV panels in the facade and roof of the atrium, solar energy is collected and converted into electricity for warming up the shower water. Thanks to these sustainability measures, Hotel Jakarta Amsterdam will be an energy-efficient building that has a BREEAM Excellent certificate and becomes the most sustainable hotel in the Netherlands.
