Futuristic makeover for the ‘Underwater Room’ at The Manta Resort off the coast of Pemba Island
Spending the night underwater still sounds like something straight out of a science fiction movie, but at The Manta Resort it has been reality for more than a decade. The resort’s iconic ‘Underwater Room’ has now received a complete makeover. The renewed underwater hotel room is the third generation of the concept, combining design, sustainability and immersive nature experiences in a way that perfectly matches the growing demand for regenerative tourism and unique hospitality experiences.

A renewed ‘Underwater Room’ in the Indian Ocean
The new ‘Underwater Room’ is located three meters below the surface of the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Pemba Island, the quieter sister island of Zanzibar. Guests of The Manta Resort literally sleep surrounded by tropical fish and colourful reef life, while large windows offer panoramic views of the ocean.
The concept was developed by Genberg Underwater Hotels and builds on more than twelve years of operational experience in underwater hospitality. The design, materials and technical systems have all been upgraded to further improve comfort, safety and long-term sustainability.
One remarkable detail: the original ‘Underwater Room’ from 2013 has now been given a new purpose. The former structure has been carefully submerged and integrated into the nearby reef, where it now serves as part of the marine ecosystem.
Hospitality with impact
According to The Manta Resort, the concept is about more than offering an extraordinary overnight stay. Revenue generated by the ‘Underwater Room supports coral reef restoration, environmental monitoring and local community programs focused on sustainable fishing practices.
In doing so, the resort aligns with a broader movement within the hospitality industry where experience, environmental conservation and social impact increasingly go hand in hand. Luxury travelers in particular are seeking exclusive experiences that also tell a meaningful story.
Honestly, when we first came across this news, we assumed it was an entirely new concept. Until we realized that we had already written about this exact location back in 2016! Now returning with a futuristic second life beneath the waves.
