At December 27 a new crypto-themed restaurant, Crypto Street Restaurant, opened in Clearwater Beach, Florida. The owner of the restaurant created a surrounding which invites his customers to get talking about cryptocurrencies or digital money on a decentralized platform called the blockchain. The art inside this new bistro on the ground level of the Residence Inn by Marriott hotel depicts rocket ships, bitcoin symbols, quotes from Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and illustrations of the dog meme from dogecoin.

Accepting cryptocurrency is slowly getting more popular in the world of hospitality. We spotted more hotels, art galleries and even a delivery service which accept cryptocurrency as payment. Like at the Artspace at the Claridge’s or recipe box service, ‘On The Table’ in the UK. Halfway 2021 The Pavilions Hotels & Resorts (with Hotel The Toren in Amsterdam amongst their portfolio) also announced that they accepted cryptocurrency from any country for hotel bookings.

Why cryptocurrencies?

The owner of the Crypto Street Restaurant, Ricardo Varona, started the restaurant after a conversation with his 24-year-old son who eventually convinced him that cryptocurrencies was not worthless. Now he hopes to get more people interested in the currency trend and to dispel misconceptions. Since the restaurant opened he even helped visitors set up accounts on Coinbase. Crypto Street Restaurant accepts all cryptocurrencies, according to Ricardo Varona. In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times he says: “So far we had a few transactions in crypto, though a lot of people are interested in using it. There’s also some people who just sold it or want to hold it in the longterm instead. But a lot of people understand that using it adds value”.

On the menu guests find the all American burgers but also food with influences from Cuba, Mexico and Spain. The names of his dishes are based on the known cryptos, like his ‘Dogedog’ hot dogs, ‘Crypto Cuban’ sandwiches and ‘To The MOOOONNN!’ brownie sundaes. One of his charcuterie boards is called: what do you call a person that only does bitcoin: Maximizers. Nobody orders a club sandwich but the love the blockchain club.
