On Saturday 14 November, Barrio opens in the Schieblock in Rotterdam Central District. The new restaurant from the entrepreneurs behind Biergarten brings together Latin American cuisine, music, cocktails and cultural programming. With a stage, its own sound system and room for Rotterdam creatives, the restaurant takes on a life of its own after dinner too. Barrio is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6 pm.

Barrio will be a place with room for more
At Barrio, gastronomy, music and culture reinforce one another. You come for tacos and cocktails, stay for a DJ set or discover an artist you didn’t know yet. The stage and the in-house sound system host live shows, listening sessions, vinyl nights, live acts and DJ sets. About twice a month, external programmers and collectives get the space to put together an evening of their own. Every Friday, it all comes together at Barrio Friday, where the restaurant and the cultural programme flow into each other. Entry to the cultural programme is free, so you can just as easily drop in for a drink and a DJ set as stay on after dinner.
A love for the area
Entrepreneurs Nikki van Dijk and Roeland Flierman have been active in Rotterdam Central District for some fifteen years with Biergarten. When the location in the Schieblock became available, they saw a chance to add more warmth, liveliness and space for people to meet. A summer pop-up with Taquería José y María was an important step in the development of Barrio.
“For us, Barrio isn’t just about food or music, but above all about what can happen when you bring people and ideas together. We want to create a place that keeps surprising, where Rotterdam creatives can do their own thing and where different worlds meet,” says Nikki.
Latin American cuisine with a Latin-inspired interior
The kitchen is led by chef Jossy Ricao, known from Taquería José y María. Eating together is central, with dishes to share and a charcoal oven at the heart of the kitchen. The menu includes tacos, guacamole prepared fresh at the table, pork neck, steak with chimichurri and chicken with mole, a characteristic Mexican sauce with deep, savoury flavours. The cocktail menu follows suit, with micheladas among other drinks.

The interior also adds to the atmosphere. The raw, industrial setting of the Schieblock is warmed up with vintage tableware, antique cabinets, candlelight and Latin-inspired accents. The result is an intimate, relaxed place with character, where good food and drink come together and where it’s just as easy to stay on after dinner for the rest of the evening.
