What will Tourism look like in 2035? Four scenarios for the Future of Travel in Europe

Worldwide, the tourism sector is growing one and a half times faster than the global economy. Tourism generates over €111 billion and 771,000 jobs in the Netherlands. Friesland also benefits, but climate change, digitalization, and geopolitical tensions are putting pressure on the sector.

For this reason, the European Tourism Futures Institute (ETFI) of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences and the European Travel Commission (ETC) developed four scenarios for tourism in 2035: from platform dominance to local resilience: Fragmented and familiar; Coordinated and familiar; Collaborative transformation; and Uneven transformation. These scenarios help policy creators, regions, and entrepreneurs make strategic choices.

Opportunities are particularly present in the scenarios focused on collaboration and local resilience: sustainable tourism, engaged communities, and initiatives that benefit both visitors and residents. View the report that the ETFI and Dr. Albert Postma (Lecturer in Transformative Foresight in Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality) contributed to in the press release via the link in the title.
