On Miffy’s (Nijntje in Dutch) birthday, Wednesday June 21 2023, the renewed Miffy (Nijntje) museum in Utrecht will open. After a major renovation, the museum has almost doubled in size and features a Miffy’s museum café, a 360-degree film experience and new themed areas.

The original Miffy museum, opened in 2016, proved hugely popular and soon too small for the more than 175,000 visitors a year. That’s why they decided to expand the monumental building on the Agnietenstraat in Utrecht with a modern extension. The grand opening will take place on June 21 2023, after which all children are welcome to come and discover the new museum.

New themed rooms, a Miffy’s museum café and a film experience

Besides the renovated galleries, two new themed areas have been created: ‘the farm’ and ‘Betje Big’s shop’. Teaching programmes have been developed for preschools and primary schools. Also new is the projection room with a 360-degree film experience, in which visitors go on an adventure with Boris Bear. In addition, the renovated Miffy museum has its own museum café, where visitors can enjoy a snack and drink in Miffy style.

For all children

All toddlers and pre-schoolers should feel welcome in the Miffy museum. It is set up especially for them, close to their experiences and at their size. Children can playfully learn through art, language and movement.

The museum is entirely wheelchair-friendly and has taken into account children with visual or hearing impairments. For instance, there are embossed games, but also games that involve listening. Children who are sensitive to stimuli can retreat to one of the calming booths. There are also reading sessions in various languages and guided tours in Dutch Sign Language.

Marco Grob, managing director of the Centraal Museum and the Miffy Museum: “In the past period, many people have worked hard under difficult circumstances to realise this wonderful extension. We are really looking forward to letting visitors discover the renewed Miffy museum. The Miffy museum is an icon in the city of Utrecht and we are happy to return to the Agnietenstraat, close to Dick Bruna’s studio in the Centraal Museum.”

Yolanda van den Berg, curator Dick Bruna and Miffy museum: “The Miffy museum is the most fun museum for toddlers and preschoolers. We hope that children and adults go on an educational journey to discover the world of Miffy and her friends together.”
