Burger King opened  its first stand-alone Dessert Bar in a shopping mall in London.  At the Dessert Bar you can buy pancakes, brownies, cakes, muffins and ice cream. If the bar proves to be a success more will follow in the United Kingdom.

In Waghäusel, Germany, the first environmental friendly Burger King has opened. By using solar energy the fast food restaurant lowers their energy usage by 45%. The restaurant is entirely lit by LED technology and even the baking plate is economical.

Burger King changed its marketing strategy, and now focuses more on women. During investigation of “Super Fans” (frequent visitors to fast-food restaurants 9 to 10 times per month) the company discovered that 29% of the visitors is older than 50 years. The assumption that most guests are males between 18 and 34 years old turned out not to be true. Burger King now started a campaign aimed at the female “superfan”. In the US only.

Here in the Netherlands we have small sustainable concepts like Pomms’ Rotterdam and the chain Vegan Junk Food Bar. These sustainable initiatives range from putting new sustainable tech in place to climate-neutral burgers and fast-food brands that solely serve vegetarian & vegan food.

With #VeganJanuary, #TryJanuary and the importance of sustainability for our future, a list of concepts worth to try! And as you will read, many of these initiatives have been reported on our website for years. We don’t really get why large companies like The Crown, The Clown and The Colonel have not played a larger part in this development.

Today is Earthday and the day that Honeybee Burger Inc. opens its new flagship location at 326 Lincoln Boulevard in Venice, California. A great day to open a plant-based burger chain!

Honeybee plans to announce various special items and launches in celebration of Earth Day, including the QSR debut of the world’s first bio-identical vegan honey from Meli-Bio, about which we recently wrote in our ‘trends we spotted week 14‘ and the Los Angeles debut of Ripple soft-serve, which will be featured in Honeybee’s popular shake program.

Recently we also spotted the vegan Plant Power Fast Food chain in the USA, we wonder when chains like this will find their way into Europe.
