The first Street Art restaurant opened this week in the Netherlands and is called ‘De Bajes’, which means ‘The Jail’. After to Hong Kong and New York it’s now also possible in the Netherlands to eat and drink between painted walls by world’s most famous street art artists. The restaurant is located on the Utrechtsestraat in Amsterdam.

De Bajes

Sven Toering, owner and director of De Bajes says: “Everything comes together with the opening of De Bajes. High quality food and drinks combined with the best street art. When we heard the property became available we knew that this is the best location for a street art restaurant in Amsterdam.”

Nowadays the word ‘Bajes’ is simply another term for jail, the original Yiddish meaning used to be ‘home’. This home has an extraordinary art collection. The walls have been painted by Ben Eline, Fanakapan, D*Face, The London Police, Hugo Kaagman, Bortusk Leer, Ox Alien, Jaune, Laser 3.14, Soren Solkaer, Cranio and others. Not only famous names on the street but also known from international galleries.

Food and beverage

Restaurant De Bajes serves 15 types of gin, 40 specialty beers and a great spirit and cocktail selection. The bar bites menu consists of different bruschetta’s, cold meat delicacies and “Zeeuwse” oysters prepared by Head Chef Niels van Halen (former chef at Michelin starred restaurant De Hoefslag) and his team. The evening menu features brasserie classics with a twist varying from: Lomo Iberico, cat fish served with stewed clams, mashed pumpkin, kombu and a superfood salad. In this jail you should not be afraid you only get water and bread.
