Revealing an unseen archive of backstage fashion photography from the 90s

From 15th September 2022 – to coincide with London Fashion Week – Claridge’s ArtSpace will exhibit celebrity photographer Gavin Bond’s unseen archive imagery from the early 90s fashion scene in a specially curated 4-D showcase. The Gavin Bond: Being There Showcase presented by Moët & Chandon and Claridge’s will present photography of standout fashion moments featuring designers from Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier, to Valentino and Versace, and the supermodels of the era – from Kate and Naomi to Claudia and Carla. This photography, rediscovered by Bond in lockdown, results in a sensational showcase of large scale vinyls of the shots, plus displays of Bond’s many scrapbooks, collections of 90s headline catwalk show invitations and video footage from the era.

Claridge’s ArtSpace

Claridge’s unveiled the newly created Claridge’s ArtSpace in October 2021 as part of its long and ongoing commitment to the arts and invites long-standing friends and gallerists within the art world to stage rotating exhibitions and shows. Gavin Bond: Being There Showcase presented by Moët & Chandon and Claridge’s will be the space’s fourth exhibit.

In 1988, Gavin enrolled as a fashion student at Central Saint Martins, alongside notable alumni and contemporaries John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan, Giles Deacon and legendary stylist Katie Grand. As CSM fashion students, they were invited to attend fashion week shows to which Gavin took his camera. With a youthful lack of inhibition, he managed to get unfettered access to dive into the world of fashion backstage. His deliberate signature characteristics – the shallow depth of field, occasional blur of movement, and softness of details – convey the sensation of catching fleeting glimpses of this iconic fashion era.  Magical scenes from intimate portraits of Vivienne Westwood to Kristen McMenamy quaffing Moët & Chandon backstage at John Galliano will be displayed, as well as imagery documenting the supermodels of the era and their memorable sisterhood.

Moët & Chandon

“Moët & Chandon was very present behind the scenes in the London fashion scene in the early 90s.  It seemed that a bottle of this famed Champagne, especially Moët Minis sipped with a straw by the models, was de rigueur,” comments Bond.

“We are delighted to be supporting Gavin in realising this unique showcase at Claridge’s ArtSpace, as he was formulating his craft at a time when Moët & Chandon was making waves within the fashion scene in the late 80s and early 90s – as is borne out by the appearance of Moët in many of his images,” explains Alexei Rosin, Moët Hennessy UK Managing Director.
