The ‘Volkshotel’ will open its doors in Amsterdam in May 2014. The old building of the newspaper ‘de Volkskrant’ undergoes a renovation to a multidisciplinary building with a hotel of 172 rooms. Existing elements with a creative character remain and a part will be converted into a creative space. The ‘Volkshotel’ will also have a restaurant, a cocktail bar with a ’20s New York look, a club, a theatre bar and a lobby with co-working space. On the roof there are hot tubs and a sauna with a view of the city of Amsterdam. The result is a combination of hospitality, work, art, music and culture.

Eat to Meet

‘Eat to Meet’ is an online platform for offline dinners at a restaurant of your choice. Participants can fill in their interests and preferences and can choose in which restaurant they want to dine. This provides social contact and a pleasant evening. Participation is free of charge, but the costs for dinner must be paid. Eat to Meet organizes the dinners, but the goal is that the participants are going to organize their own dinners. The platform collaborates with a number of restaurants in the Netherlands, dinners mainly take place on less busy days.

Pravda Pressroom opened a pop-up coffee and cocktailbar ‘L’Orangerie’ in the old ‘orangerie’ near the Harmoniegebouw in Antwerp to extend their communication activities. The bar will be open until the buildings are renovated. This will be at the end of 2015 or later. The building got a modern facelift to recover from the esthetic demolition in the eighties and is decorated with chic and shabby elements. The safety net prevents ancient plaster from falling on visitors and the small covered terrace is waiting for Spring to come in. L’Orangerie presents itself a a low energy bar, background music and dimmed lights invite for a proper glass and nice conversation. For this glass mostly cocktails are suggested.

World’s first burrito vending machine

World’s first burrito vending machine is located at a 24 hours gas station in West-Hollywood. Customers can make a choose from five types of burritos: roasted potato with egg and cheese, uncured bacon with egg and cheese, chorizo sausage with egg and cheese, range chicken with beans and rice and beef with cheese. Customers can also add sour cream, tabasco or quacemole. The burrito is made in 60 seconds for $ 3,=. While waiting for the burrito, a music video is played on the screen.

Lobster in a bird cage during reopening Diamond Horseshoe

During New Year’s Eve, Paramount hotel owner Aby Rosen reopened ‘The Diamond Horseshoe’. The space is located under the Parmount Hotel and was originally opened in December 1938, but closed its doors in 1951. ‘The Diamond Horseshoe’ is a ballroom that not only serves the night life but also as a venue for theatrical performances. The space has undergone a renovation and features two bars, a kitchen and private rooms. During the reopening the show ‘Queen of the Night’ was played, a combination of performances, music, circus and food. During the show guests were served lobster in bird cages, whole roast pork and smoked ribs with cocktails, wine and champagne.

Visitors make their own artwork in New Museum

The Polish artist Pawel Althamer will show his latest collection on the second, third and fourth floor of the ‘New Museum’ in New York from February 12 to April 13, 2014. Part of his collection is ‘The Neighbors’ where the artist involves the visitors to make an ambitious artwork. On the fourth floor of the museum, a white wall will be covered by paintings and drawings made by the visitors. Visitors can show their arts and will be part of the exhibition. At various times during the exhibition musicians will provide live music.

The Hanjie Wanda Square is a new shopping center in Wuhan, China. In 2011 a contest was held with various national and international architects. The design of UNStudio’s was chosen as winner. The building has luxury design and combines modern and traditional elements with simple materials. The focus of the design is on the visitor flows, from the three main entrances visitors are guided to two central spaces. The facade consists of 42,333 spheres with 3.1 million LED lights that can be combined to create a beautiful lighting effect. 

Driving restaurant through The Hague

A driving tram through the city of The Hague and during the trip a high-quality four-course dinner while passing the highlights of the city. Around February 2014 this will be possible in tram restaurant Hoftramm. The driving tram will be transformed into a modern and elegant restaurant and has all amenities including a kitchen, bar and toilets. Tram restaurant Hoftrammm will be a route through the center of The Hague six days a week and the guests will get served a four-course dinner with a matching beverage package. To achieve the tram restaurant there is currently a crowdfunding campaign.

IQ Creative, known from i.e. the Supperclub, Envy, Mercat and Mazzo, collaborated with chef Julius Jasper to open julius bar&grill. At the heart of the transparent kitchen there are a gigantic charcoal grill and two ceramic closable barbecues. The restaurant has various table settings with communal tables, an extended 15 meter long Chesterfield and three rooms for private dining. One of the rooms is decorated as a wine chamber and has room for six, the second room is a cozy living room with space for ten and the third is a library with inspirational books from and by Julius Jaspers.
