Discarded plastic bottles can be turned into almost anything, even schools! Lately there have been numerous schools build out of plastic bottles. The bottles are filled, stacked between chicken wire and covered with cement. Bottle schools are not just a clever way to turn waste into something useful, they are also a reminder of all the waste that is being generated in the first place.

Fortum is an electricity company in Sweden. Every year grafitti and vandalism to electrical junctionboxes cost the company over $1,5 million. Research shows that art in public places and a well maintained urban environment lead to increased safety and decreases vandalism. Fortum created the competition “Art on electrical boxes”. Anyone could upload their artwork and collect votes through social media. The artworks with the most votes were posted on electrical junction boxes throughout the city.

Tada Yasai is a Japanese initiative to give away ‘left over’ food for free. For example products that do not meet the aesthetic demands of supermarkets. Members of the site pay the shipping fee and local farmers have the opportunity to ‘sell’ their products.

SODIS Solar Water Desinfection Method

It sounds too good to be true, simply fill plastic bottles with water and UV-A rays kill all viruses, bacteria and parasites, known as SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection method). Problem is that it cann’t be checked if the water is really clean. Students of the University of Washington now developed the PotaVida, an electronic sensor that can determine if the water is clean or not.
