“When in Rome… eat a Trapizzino.”

A new kind of street food originated in the heart of Rome, it’s easy to take-away and full of taste and called “Trapizzino”. The bread has a triangular shape and is made of white pizza bread. Because the bread is closed on two sides like a pocket, it perfectly allows moist and juicy fillings and can be eaten without any hassle. This makes the trapizzino ideally suitable for traditional Roman fillings.

All in one

The local delicacy is of high quality, easily eatable, traditional and very tasty. It’s affordable as well, which makes us crave for a Dutch seller soon. The bread is created with a hundred years old mother yeast (3%), beer yeast (0,2%), selections of wheat flour, salt and extra virgin olive oil. The Trapizzino was rewarded the title of “Best Italian Street Food” voted by “Street Food Heroes”, the first travel cooking show dedicated to street food which aired on Italia 1 in the summer of 2013.

Trapizzino at Salone del Gusto

Armand tasted the Trapizzino during Salone del Gusto and was directly convinced by its taste and appearance. It was by far the most popular dish of the Dutch Slow Food Youth Network delegation.

The founder

The Trapizzino was developed by Stefano Callegari from Rome. Together with Antonio Pratticò, Humayun Kabir, Gabriele Gatti, Paul Pansera and Fabio Giacomobono he continues to build and expand his dream.

Locations

At the moment there are two locations in Rome where you can get the Trapizzino, it’s in Testaccio, via Giovanni Branca n. 88 and Ponte Milvio, Piazzale Ponte Milvio n. 13. Definitely worth a visit when you’re around!

RIJKS® at Rijksmuseum

On 1 November 2014, the RIJKS® restaurant of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will open. The restaurant is located in the redesigned Philips wing, the final renovated wing of the museum. The restaurant will be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, has 140 seats, a separate room for 36 guests and a terrace with 130 seats. There is a separate entrance to the restaurant on outside of the Rijksmuseum. RIJKS® is a joint venture of Vermaat Groep and the Rijksmuseum.

Responsible for the interior; Paul Linse

For the RIJKS® designer Paul Linse used a mix of materials such as bronze, oak, marble, blue steel and suede. This gives the restaurant it’s cool and stylisch character in combination with the design furniture. Paul Linse was previous responsible for the interior design of various stations in the Netherlands, like Rotterdam Central Station and multiple projects at Schiphol​.

Joris Bijdendijk is responsible for the kitchen team of Restaurant RIJKS®, that each season will be inspired by an international guest cook. Margot Janse from South Africa kicks off in January. The focus of the restaurant lies on Dutch products with inspiration from the exotic flavors that influenced the Dutch cuisine through the centuries. The chefs share the Slow Food mindset and have used products from The Ark of Taste in their dishes. India Pale Ale for sale at Dutch grocery store

Dutch grocery store Albert Heijn introduced India Pale Ale. The special beers Anchor and BrewDog Punk India Pale Ale (IPA) are now available in their stores. Although IPA is a global trend for years now, until recently it was only available at liquor stores and cafés in the Netherlands. Special beer retailer Bier&Co responded to the increasing demand for home-brewed beers with a distinctive flavor by introducing IPA to the big market.

Wholesale Bier&Co has a passion for tasteful beer and was the first who brought special beers to the Netherlands. As the demand from consumers, liquor stores and restaurants increased, they have become a serious player in the beer industry as well.

India Pale Ale

IPA beer originates from England, where it was mostly exported to India in the beginning of the 19th century. Because the shipping could take months, extra hops was added to the beer which increased the durability. This process gives IPA beers its typical flavor.

Delirium Café opens in Amsterdam

The famous Delirium Café opens its doors in Amsterdam on 18 September. The Delirium Café is worldwide known to beer lovers. The café originated in Brussel and is known for its amount of different beers. In 2014 the café made it to the Guiness Book of Records with a variety of 3200 beers. The establishment in Amsterdam starts ‘modest’ with 500 different kinds of national and international beers. It will be located in a characteristic property at the Piet Heinkade. Guests can eat there as well, the kitchen serves simple but qualitative dishes. Soon a Delirium boat will float through the canals of Amsterdam. The boat transports guests from and to the Delirium café.

The building of restaurant Oxwell & Co in China-Town, Singapore, has a rich and divers history which can be seen in the different rooms of the restaurant. The ground floor has a pub vibe which is perfect for a cup of coffee or a house distilled gin & tonic. The first floor has a more homely feeling and is more suited for a dinner. Their chef Mark Sargeant prepares his classics such as crisp tomato salads with goat cheese or slabs of aged Porterhouse steak and beer-battered onion rings.

Although both the ground and first floor look really nice, the absolute highlight of Oxwell & Co is the second floor. The Lord Oxwell private study, which serves as private dining room and smoking area, really impressed us. The room is not only filled with dark mahogany accents but is covered with taxidermied squirrels and paintings of animals in Victorian dresses. Take a look at the pictures, and you will see what makes this room so special.

In Amsterdam a new tropical restaurant, Waterkant, was opened. The restaurant is located in the city centre of Amsterdam and is inspired by the city of Paramaribo in Suriname. There are typical Surinamese dishes on the menu, such as Roti and Saoto soup, but also Angus burgers, grilled chicken and lobster. Waterkant is a great place to enjoy the tropical atmosphere with a typical Surinamese Parbo-beer.

On Thursday 17 July Brooklyn lager officially introduced its beer in Amsterdam. The beer is brought to the Netherlands by Bier & Co and fits well in the growing demand for specialty beers. The ‘4 Pint Rule ‘, where the drinker wants to (and can) drink four pints will, be a welcome addition to the heavier and more extravagant specialty beers.
Brooklyn Lager’s brewmaster Garrett Oliver wrote several books including one about beer and food pairing. He was important for the introduction of the Slow Food Movement in his country. The brewery has a Slow Food NYC approval and runs on 100% wind energy.

Overheated World Cup fans receive ice-cold treat

Russian soccer fans, who were in Brazil for the World Cup, were treated to a six-pack of ‘Skol’ beer entirely encased in ice. The unique packaging was designed to chill the beer without freezing it and included a handle for easy transportation. The ice-pack was designed as a reminder that packaging can be both beautiful and multifunctional. Although the video is spoken in Russian and Portuguese, the reactions speaks for themselves..
