Have you also noticed? When visiting bars it’s always the choice; fun, relaxed atmosphere and simple drinks or fancy location and great drinks. Annoying! That’s exactly what the owners of the new bar Sweetwater Social in New York thought too and they decided to offer an alternative. The bar is located in a basement, has a cool but relaxed vibe and many bar games (darts, football table etc.) and is at the same time serving amazing cocktails! Another cool touch is that the cocktails are inspired by typical New York neighborhoods/subway stops. All in all a great new place in New York which I certainly hope will inspire more bars to have the same approach, fun & quality, who doesn’t want that?^Leonie van Spronsen
In cooperation with fourteen fishing communities around the world, fish expert Bart van Olphen launches FISH TALES on 25 March. FISH TALES is a unique line of sustainable seafood with fresh fish, smoked fish, canned fish and frozen fish, all with a plain origin. The fishermen are printed on the packaging with their name and photo, with recipes and tips & tricks Bart van Olphen want to motivate consumers to cook with sustainable seafood. Through the social network of FISH TALES and the website fishermen tell their story. In the ‘shortest cooking show in the world‘ (a movie of 15 seconds) Bart van Olphen prepares various fish dishes. He will also introduce his cookbook ‘Cooking with Canned Fish’ with more than 60 recipes in June.
Brewery Duvel Moortgat introduced the new Duvel Mini in the nhow hotel Rotterdam on Friday 21 March. The Duvel Mini contains 18cl rather than 33cl but does have the same familiar taste as the famous beer. The idea is to drink smaller amounts of beer at little moments, such like appetizers, a nip or during tastings. The Duvel Mini is available at supermarkets and at the better restaurants in the Netherlands.
Following the success of The London Coffee Festival, the organizer Allegra Events brings the event to the Netherlands. The first edition of the Amsterdam Coffee Festival will be organized on 2 and 3 May. During the festival, visitors can taste a variety of coffee and participate in competitions and workshops are organized, like the final of the Dutch Barista Championship, the Latte Art Championship and Brewer’s Cup. There are also music performances and art exhibitions like the photo exhibition of the Amsterdam coffee scene. The Amsterdam Coffee Festival is the start of the Dutch Coffee Week 2014. Moët & Chandon unveils pop-up restaurant LE & in collaboration with Chef Yannick Alléno. The pop-up restaurant will open its doors at L’Orangerie in Epernay, on Moët & Chandon’s estate in France’s Champagne region from June 9 – July 9 2014. At LE &, guests are brought together around the table to experience the perfection of vintage champagne & visionary gastronomy; the culinary talent of Chef Yannick Alléno & the craftsmanship of Moët & Chandon Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez. Yannick Alléno crafted his delicious recipes to highlight the distinct flavors and subtleties of the Moët Impérial, the Moët Rosé Impérial and the Moët Nectar Impérial. Pre-booking starts in mid-April.
The Surf Sauna is specially designed for surfers who want to surf during snow and cold weather. Surfers can acclimatize in the Surf Sauna after their cold plunge. The mobile sauna is available in various sizes from 2 up to 8 persons and is weatherproof. There are special constructions for the surfboard on the outside of the sauna. The Surf Sauna is designed by a group of surfers in Portsmouth. Perhaps wintersporter goers can warm up in the sauna after a day of skiing.

Patron Sicco Gerlsma of restaurant Tandjong Priok in Arum presented the results of a pilot against the waste of newborn young goats on 14 March. Before, young goats were wasted because they had no economic value. Through a regional approach involving a goat farmer, butcher and restaurants consumers can enjoy the goat meat in various dishes and prevent unnecessary waste and animal suffering.
From 31 March onwards, super market chain Albert Heijn offers four new vegetarian ready-made ??meals: &lasagna, &moussaka, &couscous and &chili sin carne. The meals are based on recipes from 2 ** Michelin Chef Moshik, chef and co-owner of & samhoud places in Amsterdam. Tomato is used to give a meat-alike experience in the meals. Of each meal sold € 0.05 goes to ‘SOS Kinderdorpen’.
Repudo starts a digital treasure hunt for backstage passes and tracks at Pinkpop festival (the Netherlands). Together with Sony they place digital messages across the festival terrain that are only readable on the spot. The app for iPhone and Android combines GPS with a game element. Next to a variety of (sponsored) campaigns it’s also possible for users to leave messages for each other at any location. The platform is not mainstream yet but has potential for restaurants, hotels and other companies that want to introduce promotions with a game element.
McDonalds gives away free snacks with the pick ‘N play game. Smartphone owners in the neighbourhood of the interactive billboard could play the game directly online, so it’s not necessary to download an application. After choosing their favorite snack, they could play for a download with code that was refundable at the nearest restaurant.

In Sydney they thought of a special way to get everyone’s attention around World Enviroment Day. To show the people the impact of humankind on the environment they made a lifesize polar bear ice sculpture. The sculpture will melt away in several days and reveal a bronze skeleton. An interesting concept whereby the inner sculpture is revealed slowly.
The BabyNes made by Nestlé is a cup system for baby milk. Within a minute it produces a well temperatured bottle of nutritional milk. No more problems with dosing milkpowder and water. The cups won’t fit in any coffecup system, so you have to buy a new machine. An idea for restaurants next to highways?
Aude-vin introduced a new wine product, two types of wine sharing the name “Night Party”. Night Party comes in two tastes, “Pasonate Peach” and “Smooth Grapefruit”. The two drinks are based on the Viognier, Syrah and Grenache grapes, and are blended with natural grapefruit and peach aroma’s. Furthermore there aren’t any other additives and the percentage of alcohol is between 11 and 12%.

The Dutch company PB international thought of a new way to keep legionnaires’ disease out of our bathrooms. The previous showerhead systems where expensive due to the high maintainance costs. The filters needed regular replacement. This new system is self cleaning and increases the livespan of the showerhead 25 times.
“Rollende keukens” or ‘Rolling Kitchen’ is a concept where music, food and beverages meet and are served from mobile kitchens. This event takes place from the 2nd untill the 5th of June at the Culturepark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. From haute cuisine stands to excentric pizzamakers or a barbecue motorhome, it can all be seen here. Entry is free of charge.
Students of the university of Amsterdam introduced the “boterhamvis”; thin slices of white fish as sandwichspread. It is healthier than most of the meat slices and it might be cheaper.

This was once a rescue capsule hanging besides a drillplatform in the Northsea, now the capsule is turned over into a luxury suite, which accommodate a bed for 2 persons, a seat, sanitation and a minibar. It floats around on the Friesland lakes.

A new foam material that drains out water immediately. De fabric is made of recycled pvc reinforced with nylon. The water drains through the microscopic tiny holes and the pillows can aigain be used just five minutes after a rain shower.
Domino’s made a darts game in the inside of the pizza box. The dart board works together with the smartphone application from Domino’s. At first they make their customers familiar with the game in the pizza boxes, and later on those people can kill time doing the game on posters in public area’s.

Actually women do like beer and to prove that these 5 women made their own Tasty Lady beer at the Breugems Brewery, full of hop but accessible to everyone with 6,2% alcohol.
Danku (or: Thank you in Dutch) is a new and the first raw food restaurant in Belgium which has recently opened their doors. The menu only contains sprouted seeds and raw vegetables, ways of cooking are to marinate, mix, centrifuse, dry, sprout and ferment. Also cold “cooking” is possible with lemonjuice of vinegar. The philosophy is that all enzymes are kept in the food when you don’t cook it and ultimately this should be the recipe for a longer live expectancy.
