Broccoli has now its own advertising in the Netherlands. The Big Bang Broccoli campaign is launched by FoodGuerrilla, supported by Greenport NHN, Frugiventa, ZLTO and The Greenery. The goal of the campaign is to address that only 5% of the Dutch consumers eat enough vegetables and fruit. The broccoli season will be opened on 31 May and fresh Dutch broccoli will be auctioned at central locations in Amsterdam in collaboration with Dutch growers. From 31 May to 11 June FoodGuerrilla will organize surprising guerrilla campaigns like a broccoli pop-up diner in the ‘Geef café’ or sampling at railway stations. The campaign ends with the presentation of the Golden Broccoli, a price for a farmer/grower in the Netherlands that uses the smartest marketing possibilities to sell his broccoli.
Designer Constantin Bolimond from Moscow gives a second live to six-pack bottles. When the bottles of Ford Jekson are empty, they can be used to bowl! The bottles are covered with a smooth layer of wood, shaped like bowling pins and accompanied by a miniature bowling ball. The top of the bottle can be twisted to open the bottle and the different colors refer to the different flavors.
CHIO Rotterdam opens in cooperation with Oseven pop-up restaurant Schoufour, located in the Grandstand CHIO building in Rotterdam. The pop-up restaurant will be open from 15 to 24 May. The menu contains a range of dishes that also will be served during the 66th edition of CHIO Rotterdam. CHIO Rotterdam is a renowned and international equestrian event which takes place from 18 till 22 June. Restaurant Schoufour will also be opened during the event, a part of the current menu will be served in Brasserie Top Gun as well.
The first location of the Swiss restaurant chain ‘Not Guilty’ opened its doors in 2007 and in 2013 they opened their third location in Zürich. ‘Not Guilty’ stands for ‘Simply natural food’. The products are natural and locally sourced. There is a list of supplier with on the website of ‘Not Guilty’, their own story. The menu includes salads, warm salads, soups, sandwiches, yoghurt with muesli and coffee. The interior of the restaurant is open with wooden elements like a natural oak floor combined with white and pastel shades. DIY: Need inspiration for a new soap dispenser in the toilet of a restaurant or bar? Instead of throwing away empty Jack Daniel’s bottles, you can also transform them into a soap dispensers! Fill the empty bottle with soap, put adhesive film over the label to protect it from water and replace the cap with a pump. Besides Jack Daniel’s bottles you can also use other liquor bottles.
Roll up your sleeves and put these tattoos on your forearm! Italian designers Marina Cinciripini and Sarah Richiuse came up with the new concept ‘I Tradizionali’: a temporary tattoo with a recipe. These labels with recipes can be pasted on the forearm and explain the recipe step-by-step. You will always have the recipe at hand. There are a few sets with different themes, each with four recipes, you can already order a set with recipes via the crowdfunding website Eppela.
The refined taste of cognac and the rich aroma of chocolate makes a perfect combination. Cognac brand Hennessy and chocolate connoisseur Chocolaterie & Patisserie Tout made different combinations of cognac and chocolate: ‘Perfect Pairing’. The many types of chocolate and new cognac blends provide many surprising combinations. The ‘Perfect Pairing’ ranges of cocktails and desserts to a simple cup of coffee. Star chef François Geurds is looking for the best barbecue master of the Netherlands and organizes a barbecue contest on the terrace of FG Food Labs on 3 August. Ten amateur cooks will compete with each other and they will cook out of a mystery-box on the Big Green Egg (barbecue) for ten guests. These guests will also judge the dishes without knowing who prepared the dish. The winner can call himself FG BBQ Champ for one year and will receive the Big Green Egg.
The new terrace of the Wereldmuseum (World Museum) in Rotterdam opens on 16 May. Asian art is an important part of the collection of the museum and the terrace will also be in Asian style. The terrace has ramps with gravel that are connected by wooden arch bridges. There is a variety of Asian sculptures, a Balinese temple decorated with wooden carvings and a large carved table. The dishes served are prepared by Michelin star chef Wim Severein and are inspired by the on-going exhibitions. The museum will also organize various events like a tea tasting with a tea expert and a concert of Sinfonia Rotterdam.
More and more people can’t live without being constantly in touch with friends, family and the rest of the world. This becomes a daily reality. However, the batteries of the mobile devices can’t handle this behavior all day. ‘Charge to go’ made a fast charging station for this problem. We already wrote an article about a charging station at Stravinsky Food and Beverage in November 2012. These charging stations are already located in retail stores or at festivals. However, it is an innovative welcoming gesture for the hospitality industry. Certainly when it becomes more important when guests want to pay mobile. An entrepreneur can choose to charge the guest as a service ( a ‘coin operated’ version’). You can also ask your suppliers to sponsor the charging station and the touch screen will show events or actions.
Perhaps the sun doesn’t shine today, but you can already buy this book in preparation for the summer! Cookware and household manufacturers ‘Tramonitina’ and advertising agency ‘JWT Brazil’ have created a book that turns everyone into a ‘barbecue master’. The book is full of useful tips and some pages can be used as a tool. For example, there are pages that can be used as charcoal, firelighters, salt and pepper, grinder and even as an apron. The book was released in March and sent to a number of barbecue chefs, a simpler variant is sold at some bookstores in Brazil. We want to be able to buy a book like this in the Netherlands!
In museums visitors can’t get really close to an art piece, which makes it difficult to observe every detail of a painting. ‘Museo del Prado’ in Spain created, in partnership with ‘Madpixel’, the app ‘Second Canvas Museo del Prado’. The app allows visitors to view the masterpieces at a very detailed level. The app features a zoom function, show the sketches behind the painting, gives the story behind the artworks and more…
The web application ‘Hospitality Waste Coach’ helps restaurants to register food waste. The web application gives an overview of which products are wasted, the quantity, the costs and the reason why. It helps entrepreneurs to control the food waste. The application is available on Apple and Android and is intended for restaurants, caterers and other institutions that prepare food. An app that makes it easier to contribute to social responsibility. Besides the hospitality version there is also a consumer version.

With this new iPhone app, the Melon Meter, you measure the ripeness of the watermelon. First you give an indication of size of the melon, then you have to lightly knock on the melon, which will be collected by the microphone of your iPhone. Finally, the app gives an indication of the ripeness of the melon.

Lemonade brand Roosvicee has a temporary flagship taste store at the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam. Visitors can taste the new flavors and leave a ‘It’s gonna be allright, baby’ message until the 27th of August.

Mundvoll is a café and grocery store that brings back the local small neighbourhood shops. The concept is first implemented at a temporary location on the Zeppelin University campus in Friedrichshafen. The visitors can orders drinks, small bites and day-to-day groceries in the shop.

The Anti-restaurant is a pop-up restaurant, and is not located at one place. People can sign in through Facebook, but the organization decides who will be invited. Moments before the start of the dinner, the guests will receive the location. For a group of 10 to 15 persons, a five course meal will be prepared. The first Anti-restaurant took place on last 15th of July.

A new fully organic and eco-friendly fastfood restaurant in St. Ives (Great Brittain), which is specialized in burgers. For their food, they only use fresh, local and seasonal products.

Really want to go ‘away’ for the weekend? Go to space. From 2016 it is possible. The Russian company Orbital Technologies is working on a new space shuttle.

A new ice parlour, Polka Gelato, designed by Vonsung, opened in London. The interior of the ice parlour is colorless and mainly natural materials are used. The only colours you can find, are the colours of the ice cream.

All in-one: a restaurant and supermarket, located in a mall in Skokie, Illinois. The restaurant covers almost 3,000 square meters and offers 18 counters where you can find organic, seasonal en local dishes and products. Guests can dine and doing their groceries afterwards.

Turntable Kitchen is started by a couple from San Francisco, who combine music and food. Every month they create a Turntable Kitchen Pairings Box, which includes a 7-inch vinyl single with tracks of their favourite bands, several recipes, local premium dried ingredients and suggested pairings. This box will be send monthly to their members.

After de frozen yogurt ice cream, we now see the ice cream parlours where the ice cream is prepared by using liquid nitrogen of a temperature of almost –200 Celsius degrees (-320F). Nitro Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt opened two flagship stores in New York. Guests can compose their own ice cream, by choosing the base (regular, soya, yogurt, sorbet), then they can choose the taste and finally they choose the topping.

Nivea introduced in 2010 a sun indicator to enjoy the sun responsibly. This iPhone application tells you how and where you can enjoy the sun best, based on your skin type and the UV strength at your location. In addition, the timer indicates how long you can still enjoy the sun.

Gimme Pops are freshly made, natural ice pops, without the use of artificial ingredients. The ice pops are available in the tastes Mango Chili, Berry Basil, Mojito, Carrot Cake, Minty Pineapple, Razz Tarragon, Ginger Melon and Banana Curry. Gimme Pops are available at several events.

Commissioned by the Indianapolis Musuem of Art, Visiondivision is creating a project for the Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. In order to sacrifice something, to make something new, a large tree will be rebuild to several tables, chairs, swings and a kiosk.

Seen on several menu’s in America – freshly baked cookies – at the Top Notch Hotel in Vermont, served as ‘The Cookie Monster’ with a healthy glass of milk! Given by the number of (small) children who were eating this, it is clearly a hit! But also spotted in other restaurants – a bowl of freshly baked nuts, chocolate and coconut cookies, – also fun to share. If you order this dessert by yourself, it is wise to order a doggy bag as well!

At the end of August, four small Dutch family breweries, will present a new beer: the taste of Real 2011 (De Smaak van Echt 2011). The great thing about this beer is, that the best individual ingredients are being used. And what we understood from their tasting notes, they succeeded in making an ambercolored beer fermented with 6% alcohol, not too dry, with a pleasant bitterness.

MobiCcino opened his first CoffeeQube (an espresso bar) in an officebuilding of a big Dutch company in Amsterdam. We, of Horecatrends, are jealous, imagining having a barista in the canteen! At 6 square meter, espresso made by the Mirage machine and a barista. MobiCcino is working on the CoffeeQube XL and XXL. Although we like the CoffeeQube we prefer the MobiCcino (smal red car), it’s such a great eyecatcher!

The ultimate dessert for kids: Camp Fire Smores! Roasted marshmallows with biscuits, hot chocolate and fresh red fruit, it is finger-licking good. This is often served in America, the photos were taken at Harbour Sixty Steakhouse in Toronto. Easy to make and kids do want to come back! So if you ever visit Toronto with kids, go to the Harbour sixty steakhouse for a great steak and delicious dessert!

Homemade cocktails by VinCo. By mixing the pre-mix with a white wine and ice cubes you create the perfect fresh and light alcoholic cocktails. For the non-alcoholic version, mix this with Indian Tonic, or to create a stronger version, mix it with tequila.

Last week we spotted a 20 minutes newspaper at the website of Ads of the World (created by the Miami Ad School in Madrid). During our holiday in America we noticed that newspapers are still served at the hotelroom door. At the Topnotch resorts we were served the New York Times Digest, a ten-page synopsis of The New York Times. TimesDigest is designed and edited to provide a balanced selection of the Times’ top stories and editorial comment, along with sports, weather, business news and the celebrated crossword puzzle.

An effort from coffee brand Maxwell House in Canada, serving free coffee, positive stories and performances by musicians to the people of Toronto at their Optimism Café. Open for the month of July, and part of their “Brew some good”campaign, (with tv adds etc.). With the campaign they are trying to make Canada feel more glass half-full and in the meantime building brand awareness. At the Optimism Café musicians and artist appeared.
