To celebrate and mark the coronation of King Charles III (Saturday May 6), Claridge\u2019s – the legendary Mayfair hotel – often referred to as the \u2018annexe of Buckingham Palace\u2019, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023. Like a Claridge\u2019s Coronation Archive Windows in the hotel\u2019s lobby, a new portrait of King Charles lll by Claridge\u2019s Artist in Residence, Claridge\u2019s Crest Cake with gold leaf and Coronation cocktails.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Claridge\u2019s<\/span><\/a> Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel\u2019s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures.\u00a0 Showcased for all to see in Claridge\u2019s Coronation Archive Windows on the ground floor of the hotel, this display will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel.\u00a0 These precious mementos include pages from Queen Victoria\u2019s diary, celebratory fans created by the hotel in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge\u2019s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.\u00a0 As well as giving guests insights into royal festivities at the hotel over the past century, the showcase will also include treasures that have been collected over the years from a charming figural biscuit tin in the form of the royal state coronation coach to original coronation photographs, programmes and official souvenirs. Claridge\u2019s Coronation Archive Windows will be open to view in the hotel\u2019s lobby throughout the month of May 2023, when the Mayfair hotel will also be proudly flying Union Jack flags across its entrance bringing a sense of pomp and ceremony to Brook Street.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, to mark this special moment, <\/span>Claridge\u2019s Artist in Residence David Downton<\/a><\/span> will unveil a new colour portrait of King Charles lll to sit in the hotel\u2019s Talking Heads Gallery \u2013 a collection of portraits showcasing famous hotel guests of past and present.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, for those with a sweet tooth, the hotel\u2019s signature Claridge\u2019s Crest Cake, will have an extra regal touch.\u00a0 The crown in the hotel\u2019s emblem acts as a symbol of status and Claridge\u2019s royal appointment, and so \u2013 for the week of the Coronation \u2013 will be flourished with gold leaf.\u00a0 Following the hotel\u2019s tradition of mixing special Coronation cocktails over the years, Claridge\u2019s newest bar – The Painter\u2019s Room – will create a special drinks menu, nodding to the fact that King Charles himself is a celebrated painter. The cocktail list will reflect the King\u2019s love of his garden at Highgrove and all things floral, botanical and sustainable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Claridge\u2019s has long been seen as \u2018the royal hostelry\u2019 from as far back as the nineteenth century and has a wealth of royal stories and anecdotes.\u00a0 For one Coronation, extra emergency flagpoles had to be added to the brickwork of the hotel in order to fly the flags for the many different royals and royal dignitaries staying at Claridge\u2019s.\u00a0 Another legendary royal tale was that a few days before a notable royal occasion, when a harassed diplomat telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the King, the response was \u201cCertainly sir, but which one?\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
