In this report Google gives an insight how the power of data can be used to predict and use trends. Because we know that trends spotted in the United States most likely will hit Europe in the next couple of years, we love to share some of these so-called food trends. We made a list of dishes and products that most probably will be popular soon in Europe as well. Let’s deep dive in some of the not yet very known products and dishes in Europe like Turmeric, Bundt Cakes, Cauliflower Rice, Pho, Overnight Oats, Bitter Melon, Jackfruit, cheese Curds, Italian Pasta and Funfetti…..

These are our picks of the rising stars from the USA food trends of ‘Think with Google’

1. Turmeric

Okay, this one has been spotted before, we already wrote about Golden Milk. This is almond milk with a combination of either honey, a bit of vanilla, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg or anything to your liking. With as main ingredient the very healthy turmeric. It could as well be sold as ‘turmeric latte’ or haldi dhooh (the original Indian name). Turmeric is one of those foods that are becoming popular because of the fact that more and more people are searching for products that have a positive impact on their body. Most people seem to search for the benefits of turmeric on illnesses, according to Google.

2. Bundt Cakes

When we read about these cakes in the report – we couldn’t imagine anything by this name. So we checked Wikipedia and then it hit us: the Bundt Cake is based on the traditional European cake known as Gugelhupf. All over the United States the Bundt Cake is gaining popularity – check out the website of ‘Nothing Bundt Cakes’. Maybe the Bundt Cake will even replace the cupcake!

3. Cauliflower Rice

That makes sense, we want to eat more vegetables and less carbs. Veggies are healthier but we love carbs, so why not try to fake them? Read this recipe for a 10 minute healthy cauliflower rice!

4. Pho

A Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of broth, linguine-shaped rice noodles, a few herbs, and primarily served with either beef or chicken. Pho originates from Vietnam where it’s sold as street food. Logical with the popularity of broths the last winters in the USA, it’s almost the same but with a Vietnamese twist to it.

5. Overnight Oats

We visited one of the first oatmeal based breakfast and lunch restaurants in New York City four years ago and now overnight oatmeals is happening! Perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast and served with all kind of flavours. Like; Chocolate Peanut Butter, Carrot Cake, Banana chocolate Chip, Tropical Fruit, Strawberry Cheesecake, Pumpkin Spice etc. Flavours like in ice cream! We already spotted the first Oatmeal stores in Europe as well, for example in Berlin. And we even spotted an Oatmeal Latte, yeah wright a latte with your breakfast in it! Find some recipes here!

6. Bitter Melon

Bitter melon, or Goya, is commonly used for beneficial health reasons. Bitter melon is also referred to as bitter gourd, Karela, or Balsam Pear. The melon has an extremely bitter taste, but is a helpful food. Bitter melon is commonly added to stir-fry, or may be enjoyed stuffed. It may also be added to diets as a supplement.

7. The jackfruit

A species of tree in the fig, mulberry and breadfruit family. It’s native to parts of South and Southeast Asia and is believed to have originated in the southwestern rain forests of India. The jackfruit is a multiple fruit, composed of hundreds to thousands of individual flowers, and the fleshy petals are eatable. Jackfruit has a lot of health benefits and nutrition facts.

8. Cheese Curds

Cheese curd is fresh, young cheddar cheese in the natural, random shape and form before being processed into blocks and aged. Unlike the aged variety, curds lose their desirable qualities if refrigerated or not eaten for a few days (the squeak disappears and they turn dry and salty). They’re fried and served with a sauce.

9. Rigatoni

Tortellini, Linguine, Penne, Fusilli, Mac and Cheese Bites, Gemelli… According to the Think with Google report: Pasta is a rising star in the United States. Well, we think that’s already the case in Europe as well…. The focus is more on regional Italian dishes though.

10. Funfetti

Yeah, that one has never left the ice cream world of kids in Europe. it looks like the Americans are using it at pies, pancakes, donuts, cookies etc. If we might make a suggestion for the food trends in 2017 for the Americans: start searching for the Dutch Hagelswag. That is delicious, chocolate on bread!

Think with Google, food trends based on the top searches in the United States.
