Waste streams of food are being converted to new, tasteful products. With the factory Hutten Catering wants to reduce the huge amount of useless wasted food.

De Verspillingsfabriek

The numbers don’t lie on the website of kliekiepedia.nl. One third of the worldwide food production is eventually being thrown away. In the Netherlands, consumers are wasting 50 kilogram per person each year. It’s not just the consumers who carelessly waste their leftovers. Also suppliers, catering companies, food manufacturers and supermarkets throw away food what doesn’t need to be thrown away. According to the ‘Waste factory’ It’s time for a solution. At this moment you will find to production streams at ‘De Verspillingsfabriek’ which are being converted to new products.

Barstensvol (bursting with)

The products made at the ‘Barstensvol’ production stream are products not suitable for sale. This may be because the size or shape don’t meet the requirements but this can also be the products at which the ‘best before date’ is almost expired. Products labelled as surplus can also be found here. Where they normally would be destroyed, new products are being made under the name of ‘Barstensvol’.

Overlekker

Overlekker is an initiative from Hutten in corporation with supermarket chain Plus. The products from Overlekker are made from fresh products which are too tasteful and ripe. Although the products are still eatable, they are not suitable for sale anymore in the supermarkets. More taste, less waste.

THREE-SIXTY

De Verspillingsfabriek is situated in an old distribution centre of DHL in Veghel. It is part of THREE-SIXTY, a place where entrepreneurs, students and start-ups get the opportunity to develop innovative concepts in the field of food wastage. Besides De Verspillingsfabriek and Foodsquad the building is also known as Knowledge and Expertise centre.

Other initiatives against food wastage

Recent years more and more initiatives against food wastage popped up in the Netherlands. For example the Kliekipedia.nl website where you find ‘left-over’ recipes or Krokommer, which is using ‘ugly’ fruits for their products. Also InStock is fighting against food wastage. Currently they have a restaurant, pick up store and foodtruck. In all of the establishments is being cooked with products who normally don’t even make it to our plates.

Hutten Catering has its own ‘verspillingsfabriek’ or ‘waste factory’ since last month.
