Recently, we had an interesting discussion among colleagues about 50+ architecture for hotels. When is a room truly suitable for guests aged 50 and over? Do older travellers really find a lower bed a problem? And how important is it that guests aged 50+ appreciate your hotel room? I belong to that target group myself, we travel as often as possible and almost always stay in hotels. Did you know that this target group accounts for over 40% of the Dutch population? And hotels don’t have many guests under the age of 20 either!

No matter how trendy the hotel concept is, we constantly run into plenty of fellow 50+ travellers! So, to answer that question about importance right away: yes, it does matter. One colleague also asked whether we really appreciate a so-called ‘pee light’. A ‘pee light’? Excuse me?

This winter, the iconic holiday attraction ICE! by the Gaylord Hotels returns to six U.S. resorts, offering guests a magical walk-through world of hand-carved ice sculptures, live shows, and family-friendly Christmas activities. The event features over 2 million pounds of ice, sculpted into scenes from classic holiday stories by master artisans from Harbin, China.

We wrote about ICE! by Gaylord Hotels back in 2023, but who doesn’t love this iconic holiday tradition? It’s also a great reminder to start planning your own Christmas event. This experience is especially inspiring for smaller hotel or restaurant chains looking to create memorable, guest-attracting holiday moments.

To celebrate International Dog Day on August 26, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, part of Accor, invites guests for heartwarming stays that go far beyond being simply ‘pet-friendly’. With the motto #FairmontLovesDogs, the hotel group celebrates this special day across its global portfolio, but Fairmont offers luxury service and pampering for dogs all year round at its iconic locations. Guests are encouraged to share their encounters with the Canine Ambassadors and pet travel stories using the hashtag #Fairmontlovesdogs.

We personally met the dog from Fairmont Château Whistler back in 2019—such a sweetheart! (Check out the hotel’s new canine ambassador). Just like the sweetheart Bella, the dog of hotel & Michelin-starred restaurant De Bloemenbeek. While the many dogs at Fairmont inspired us to adopt another one ourselves, our office dog Jimmy was already enjoying playtime with Bella during our visit to the hotel and restaurant. This article highlights some great examples of how you can pamper your guests’ four-legged friends: dog-friendly city guides, dog macarons, embroidered doggie bathrobes, and more.

Remaining emissions are offset through nature-based solutions, such as forest and soil restoration projects.

From the Oscars and BAFTA Awards to the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals, the silver screen inspires travellers the world over. The ever-growing consumption of films and series is fuelling a boom in cinema tourism, also known as ‘Set-jetting’. This trend, in which travellers take inspiration from hit films when choosing destinations, has had its popularity boosted by popular and award winning films such as Killers of the Flower Moon (Oklahoma), Oppenheimer (New Mexico) and Barbie (Palm Springs). According to Bloomberg, there is a real “White Lotus Effect”: the filming of seasons 2 and 3 in Sicily and Thailand has had a significant impact on bookings in these two destinations (season 3 launches on 17 February).

Traditional hospitality and innovative technology. Small-scale luxury and personal attention. With the launch of Arq Hotels, the Netherlands’ newest boutique hotel group is a reality. What started with the acquisition of the Paleis Hotel (Palace Hotel) in The Hague in September, grew into a collection-of-two earlier this month with the affiliation of Kloosterhotel de Soete Moeder (Convent hotel The Sweet Mother) in Den Bosch. Thus Arq Hotels doubled in size in a short time – and it doesn’t stop there. The group’s focus is on growth, with a portfolio of 20 boutique hotels as its ambitious goal. It is headed by Nicoline Montanus, who worked for Eden Hotels for many years.

We love the fact that some hotels invite friends and/or designers to decorate their Christmas tree. We’re always looking forward to the arty Christmas tree of the Claridge’s hotel in Mayfair, this year decorated by designer Sir Paul Smith. The arty Christmas tree just outside the Connaught hotel has been decorated by influential British artist Conrad Shawcross RA. But we also always love the decorations at the Plaza hotel in New York, the Bûches de Noël in France and more. A list of luxury and fancy Christmas trees, decorations and traditional delicacies by luxury hotels. Who knows some of it might inspire you!
