That my generation spends a lot of time online is no surprise to anyone. But the number of fun, small gestures you come across can still be surprising. Like at Schmuck, a cocktail bar in New York City, which recently went viral for offering a new chilled glass to a guest who was slowly enjoying her dirty martini. See the video by Craft and Cocktails on Instagram.
The bar at Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea also recently went viral with a hospitable cocktail gesture. A guest, Leah Stapleton, shared on Instagram how she and her tablemate were served a mini version of each cocktail alongside the full-size ones, so they could taste each other’s drinks, check out her reel here. A simple yet effective way to surprise your guests!
Of course, you can also serve a flight of mini-cocktails, giving your guests the chance to try several at once. This article on VML highlights some inspiring examples. On Horecatrends, we wrote about a whisky flight at The Malt Vault in Utrecht before: ideal for both beginners and seasoned whisky lovers.
In the past, we’ve written about serving a mini ice cream with coffee. The Instagram account Rich & Thirsty recently shared a grown-up version: the Sauvignon & Sea Salt, as they call it themselves. A glass of wine with a mini cone of fries, clipped to the rim with a small peg. I’am already a fan! How fun is it to serve your guests a little snack with their glass of wine?

We’ve always believed in the power of small hospitality gestures – long before they could go viral online. Besides boosting brand awareness, they spark conversations and can be the reason someone returns. In short: they create a connection with your guests. And isn’t that ultimately what makes most hospitality entrepreneurs the happiest?

Salsa Shop continues to expand and opened a new location on August 11 at Rotterdam Central Station. Following a successful opening at the Stadhuisplein, this is the second location in Rotterdam where guests can enjoy fresh Mexican dishes, between the tracks.
The new spot is located inside the ticket gates, between Julia’s and the entrance to the platforms, a place where thousands of travellers pass by every day. Guests can take their order to go or enjoy it at one of the small tables, with a view of the vibrant heart of the station. Orders are ready within 90 seconds, a signature Salsa Shop promise.
The choice for Rotterdam Central was a strategic one: it is one of the busiest train stations in the Netherlands and fits perfectly with Salsa Shop’s strategy to be present in high-visibility, top locations. Previous experiences in the city have been positive, and regional research confirmed strong demand for the Salsa Shop. The collaboration with NS was established through a pitch, where quality and variety of station offerings were central. The new Salsa Shop location at Rotterdam Central can be found at Stationsplein 9a and is open daily from 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM.
As of August 11, Luc Boerrigter (26) and Lynn Rademaker (24) have taken over the Bagels & Beans location at Mariaplaats in Utrecht. What started for Luc as a side job eleven years ago has grown into a passion and a future. Eight years ago, he met Lynn, with whom he not only started a relationship but also shared a dream: running their own hospitality business together.
Their love for hospitality and the warm, recognizable atmosphere of Bagels & Beans form the foundation of their approach. “It always felt like coming home, and that’s exactly what we want to pass on to our guests,” says Lynn. Both have extensive experience in hospitality and emphasize the importance of personal attention and a warm welcome, also for pets.
The location will get a fresh update with a contemporary interior, while maintaining its familiar atmosphere. Luc and Lynn want their Bagels & Beans to be a place where neighbours, students, day-trippers, and dog lovers all feel at home. “The place will stay the same, just with a new face,” says Luc.

Launching at the height of tomato season, the smoothie is available from August 6th at select Smoothie King locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Miami, Greater New York, and Northern New Jersey, priced at $5.70 while supplies last.
The recipe pairs Acai sorbet, apple juice, strawberries, and raspberries with HEINZ Simply Tomato Ketchup, known for its natural ingredients and signature sweet-and-tangy flavor. The result, according to both brands, is a balanced smoothie with a distinctive ketchup finish—an unusual twist designed to intrigue both smoothie enthusiasts and ketchup fans.
Angie Madigan, Vice President of Elevation Marketing at Kraft Heinz, explained the motivation: “The idea of a ketchup smoothie is provocative, and our priority was creating a delicious fruit smoothie with well-balanced ketchup notes. Smoothie King’s expertise helped bring that vision to life.” To find a Smoothie King Location featuring the HEINZ Tomato Ketchup Smoothie near you, visit this website.
HEINZ highlights its ‘tomato masters’, who ensure only the ripest tomatoes are used for its ketchup, which contains no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. Smoothie King reinforces its Clean Blends promise, banning over 75 unwanted ingredients while focusing on healthier recipes that support good habits. Lori Primavera, VP of R&D at Smoothie King, noted the careful development process: “After months of R&D, testing, and tasting, we landed on a savoury-sweet blend that celebrates the tomato in all its glory.”
The launch also taps into the rising cultural popularity of smoothies, boosted by celebrity recipes and millions of social media posts. To encourage fan participation, HEINZ and Smoothie King invite consumers to share their opinions online using #KetchupSmoothie. With this bold new drink, the two companies aim to stir conversation, challenge perceptions, and refresh customers during the heat of summer.

At restaurant Sel Gris (*) in Knokke-Heist, Belgium everything revolves around the guests. Chef Frederik Deceuninck, who previously worked at renowned restaurants such as De Karmeliet, pours his passion and talent into creating dishes that delight more than just the taste buds. Dining here is truly a feast, set along the beautiful Zeedijk with breathtaking views of the beach and sea.
You can explore his menu on his personal website. We absolutely enjoyed the many delicious amuses and our main courses, 5 servings of lobster and fried goose liver with peach & lavender! But what stood out was the dessert option for diabetics: sugar-free vanilla ice cream, served with orange or chocolate sauce. And we didn’t miss the taste of sugar. Inspiration for other restaurants? Back in 2018, we published about ‘the gym of the future’, reimagining fuel stations as places to fuel our bodies once car become autonomous. The Tesla Diner is a glimpse into that evolving future of roadside stops, showing how traditional fuel stations might transform. Here in Europe, the first Porsche charging lounge was introduced in Bingen am Rhein last year, echoing the familiar look of conventional fuel stations. The Stickelius Monument is a canine-sized tribute to the iconic Sibelius Monument, built entirely from sticks collected by Neris, a local rescue dog famous for his “Stick Gallery” art installations. This 1:4 scale version drew media attention and calls for it to become a permanent feature.
The route also featured Café Dogatta, a “pup-up” café next to the popular seaside Café Regatta, and Rajasaari Island, a unique dog-only island in the heart of Helsinki. Open year-round and accessible on foot, Rajasaari offers forests, beaches, and swimming spots – with the President and Prime Minister living just across the water. While the route itself was created for the launch weekend, Dogatta and Rajasaari remain open permanently for locals and visitors.
Finland, home to 5.6 million people and around 800,000 dogs, has the highest number of dogs per person in the world. Helsinki alone has an estimated 40,000 dogs, and the city offers over 90 dog parks, several dog beaches, a 50-hectare dog forest, and numerous training fields. Dogs are welcome in most shops, cafés, and restaurants – some with special dog menus – and even in libraries, where “reading dogs” help children practise reading. Dogs also travel for free on all public transport.
According to Soila Lehkonen, Head of Brand & PR at Helsinki Partners, the initiative aimed to showcase beloved outdoor spots from a dog’s perspective: “Pets boost happiness. We wanted to create attractions both dog owners and their pets could enjoy together.”
The Doggy Route to Happiness reflects Helsinki’s inclusive approach to well-being – extending its world-renowned quality of life not just to humans, but also to their four-legged companions.

Kamer le Deux will sometimes feature live music. A beautiful tribute to the previous owner Marc Cruellas, who made dining at his restaurant special with his French chansons! The wine bar Rabajà has already opened its doors in June. Here, you can enjoy a fine glass of Italian wine paired with treats such as paccheri fritti, olive ascolane, and chuletas de cordero alla plancha.

As of August 1, 2025, Wouter von Asmuth has taken over the operation of the iconic Hague establishment Bistrot Deux la Place from the Cruellas family. Chef-host Wouter von Asmuth is moving his café-restaurant Kamer in The Hague to Deux la Place’s location at Maliestraat 9, reopening on August 30, 2025, as Kamer le Deux. In addition to being a Mediterranean bistro with classic French flavours, Kamer le Deux will also feature a cocktail bar.
The now-closed Kamer will relocate within The Hague to the Maliestraat, the intimate venue offers seating for 28 guests, merging the culinary styles of both former restaurants into one concept: a Mediterranean bistro with classic French tastes.
Wouter von Asmuth explains: “Kamer le Deux builds on what we’ve already been doing, but with an even stronger Mediterranean bistro identity and a distinctive twist. Naturally, we continue to make everything in-house, from scratch, letting the ingredients speak for themselves.”
The menu will feature around 25 dishes, including oysters, escargots, forest mushroom ravioli, steak tartare, confit de canard, tournedos Rossini, and desserts such as crème caramel and tarte tatin. Signature vegetarian favourites will return, such as the cauliflower steak with cherry tomato, zucchini, aubergine, and blue cheese, the grilled bread with wild tomato and burrata, and the famous ‘Josper Shrooms’, the mushrooms cooked in the Josper oven. The bar will remain open in the afternoons for drinks, offering a fine selection of draft beers, cocktails, and bites.
“In his bistro, the late Marc Cruellas knew how to make every night a celebration. We’ll continue that tradition, translating his famous musical moments into monthly live performances,” says Wouter. De website van Kamer le Deux is gelinkt in de titel of bekijk hier de aankondiging op Instagram.
Since June, Leiden has welcomed a new culinary hotspot on the Morsstraat 25: Rabajà Wine & Kitchen. Founded by two Italian friends – chef Domenico Savarese and award-winning sommelier Alessandro Matrone – the wine bar embodies the essence of Italy: passion, tradition, and the joy of good living.
The name Rabajà refers to a renowned wine area in Piedmont, famous for its elegant Barbaresco wines. For Alessandro, a three-time Wine Expert of the Year, Rabajà represents the very soul of wine: character, authenticity, and a deep connection to the land. His wine list features carefully curated bottles from across Italy – from refined Tuscan reds to bold Barolos – all chosen for their origin, personality, and excellent value. He is also a wine merchant.
In the kitchen, Domenico creates Mediterranean dishes inspired by his hometown of Vico Equense on the Amalfi Coast. His international career – from cruise ships to running the successful trattoria Buoni Amici in Hoofddorp – shines through in every plate.
Rabajà offers a warm, welcoming space where exceptional wines and flavourful dishes meet. Whether you’re stopping in for a special glass or a full dinner, according to the owners you’ll taste Italy at their wine bar in the heart of Leiden. De website is gelinkt in de titel en je kunt hier een sfeerbeeld bekijken.

Recently, we wrote about the way dogs are welcomed at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts – sometimes even by a Chief Happiness Officer or Director of Pet Relations! Several of their hotels have resident dogs who are available at set times for cuddles or walks with guests. Naturally, water bowls, a dog blanket, and treats are always ready for visiting dogs. Also handy: maps with local walking routes, I can’t tell you how often I’ve been searching for a nice, safe trail near a hotel!
Another great touch: fenced-off areas where dogs can run free. We came across an area like this at the Alpin Resort Sacher in Seefeld – after a leashed walk, the dogs could have a good run around in a field behind the hotel. These kinds of off-leash areas can now even be spotted occasionally along highways in France and Germany. Got the space? Why not! Perhaps even in collaboration with a dog food brand.
If you think treats like a puppuccino are only popular outside Europe, think again. We follow the account Op stap met Luuk (“Out and about with Luuk”), where they go for dog ice cream at ijskâld, with locations in Lemmer, Urk, Sneek, and Emmeloord in the north of the Netherlands. Apparently, ijskâld offers two flavours especially for dogs: green bean, and banana-peanut butter.
We’ve also noticed more and more restaurants in France allowing dogs inside the dining room, as well as on the terrace. We were reminded of this when we came across a reel from Worldwide Winston – about the luxury travels of a corgi who even flies in the cabin! According to them, Ocean House in Rhode Island is “the best dog-friendly hotel.” This Relais & Châteaux property welcomes dogs with warm broth upon arrival while their humans enjoy a glass of bubbly. They also have a special dog menu.
A few months ago, we stayed at Le Richebourg Hôtel, Restaurant & Spa in Vosne-Romanée, where Jimmy was welcomed with her name on a food bowl, some treats, and the option to order from a dog menu. Dogs were welcome in the dining room, with tables seating dogs spaced apart to avoid distractions.
At Maison Heler, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, we found food bowls in our room featuring our national mascot dachshund Takki – plus a plush toy! I’m still trying to find the same bowls for our office.
On Instagram, we came across a reel from Emily Jane Johnston, who loved enjoying a martini with her dog – shaken, not stirred! The bartender at Maison Assouline even made a special puptini for her golden retriever.
Less elaborate, but also fun for terraces: there’s even beer for dogs. Why not put it on the menu? There are plenty of places where owners enjoy having a beer together with their dogs.
Officially called CESAR Restaurant Weekend, it took place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July in New York, but on other dates also in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Nashville. Dog food brand CESAR invites dog owners to dine out together at participating restaurants – in New York, for example, at City Vineyard by City Winery.
We wrote about this weekend in our trends we spotted week 34 2024: it remains a great idea for restaurants to team up with a dog food brand for a special event – especially if you’re located near an off-leash area! And for restaurants by the water: a Dog Stick Library is also always highly appreciated by guests and their dogs.

The inspiration for the 2025 Duvel Designer Glass comes from artist Loes van Delft, who reflects on the hardened and turbulent world around her. For the entire month of August, restaurant Bisous is taking over the beautiful terrace of renowned restaurant Daalder of chef Dennis Huwaë at the Postjesweg 1 in Amsterdam. Think champagne, fresh cocktails, shared dining and that signature Bisous warmth – now under the summer sun. Their own terrace on the Albert Cuypstraat is small – so this is your chance to enjoy Bisous with a golden glow. Dennis is a fan of Bisous and is handing them the keys to his beloved Daalder location for a summer filled with flavor, flair and sparkles.
The Summer Terrace by Bisous is located by the water and bathes in sunlight all day long. Take a seat on the soft waterfront sofa and enjoy a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne with delicious bites. Or settle in at one of the tables for an al fresco multi-course dinner beneath the fluttering, colorful Bisous fabrics. Enjoy already iconic Bisous dishes such as the Sole de Mer – a whole sea bass baked in a salt crust – or the Tournedos au Poivre Concassé. Chef Dennis has also added two Daalder Classics to the Bisous menu: Toast Tajima – wagyu ham with winter truffle – and Poulet au Caviar. Pair your meal with one of the exquisite Burgundy wines Bisous is known for, and you’ll be transported straight to the Riviera.
On weekends, Bisous opens its doors after dinner to Bisous After Hours, the night bar inside Het Sieraad. Resident Bisous DJs spin their sets here, joined by exciting new names you won’t want to miss. Dance the night away in a space that feels like a secret slice of Paris in Amsterdam. It’s the perfect spot if you’re in the mood to dance after dinner—or drop by for late-night cocktails and bites on the terrace, followed by a little groove. The after-dinner club of the Summer Terrace by Bisous operates on a guest list and is open all summer long, every Friday and Saturday night from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Check out their website for reservations, link in the title.
In an idyllic spot in Leiden (just check out their reel), partners Esther (31) and Zoë (30) have opened their ice cream shop, IJshaven (translation: ice cream port). The shop officially opened this past May—just in time for ice cream season. Esther and Zoë have both lived in Leiden since 2013 and met during their student days. They sell their artisanal ice cream at Haven 20. We enjoyed a delicious scoop of ‘Key West Lemon Pie’!
The shop is especially popular with locals and walkers heading to or from Leiden’s Singelpark. They also offer a loyalty card—collect a stamp with each scoop, and once your card is full, you get two free scoops. Since making their dream of starting a business together a reality, Esther and Zoë have picked up a new hobby: checking the weather app! In their opinion, 24 to 27 degrees Celsius is the perfect temperature for selling ice cream.
The Foodmaster location at Lijsterlaan 32 in Alphen aan den Rijn has a new owner. Bianca, an experienced entrepreneur with a deep passion for hospitality and food, is taking over the reins. What makes this takeover special? She plans to combine the familiar Foodmaster menu with authentic Indonesian influences, such as a specialty like homemade rendang. Guests can also stop by for a slush or an ice cream topped with boba.
Bianca is no stranger to the hospitality industry. With nearly ten years of experience in the snack bar sector and nine years as the owner of a successful Indonesian toko, she brings a wealth of knowledge and flavor to the Alphen location. After living in the town for five years, it feels like the perfect place to unite her love for food and entrepreneurship. “The location is easily accessible and situated on a beautifully renovated street just outside the city center. I want to create a place where everyone feels welcome,” says Bianca.
