Like a former airhostess I am really thrilled with this initiative! Although I stopped working as a airhostess some 30 years ago but I still taste and spot a lot of the ame old coffee I used to make in my days. Cold brew coffee anyone?

This summer, I had the occasional cold espresso with an ice cube again. The first time I drank this cold espresso was in Spain, where an ‘espresso con hielo’ is a standard menu item. However, here in the Netherlands, cold coffee is not so popular as of yet. Of course, many drink a frappuccino or an iced coffee with vanilla ice cream, but the huge range of flavours and compositions you encounter abroad are still missing here. ^Marjolein

Oleato | the new coffee ritual by Starbucks

Starbucks recently unveiled a transformational innovation in coffee, Oleato – a line of coffee beverages that brings together the unexpected – Starbucks arabica coffee deliciously infused with a spoonful of Partanna cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil. The result is velvety smooth, delicately sweet and lush coffee that uplifts each cup with an extraordinary new flavor and texture. The new beverage platform which launched in Starbucks stores in Italy on Feb. 22, includes: Oleato™ Caffè Latte, Oleato™ Iced Shaken Espresso and Oleato™ Golden Foam™ Cold Brew. Followed by California in the USA this spring and later by Japan, the Middle East and the UK.

This new product by Starbucks made us think of Bulletproof Coffee we spotted a couple of years ago, although this is made with butter and some ‘Brain Octane oil’. We most certainly are going to try the new coffee ritual at Starbucks when we go to Italy this May.

Coffee Free Coffee | A cup of hot coffee without the coffee beans

At the end of September 2022 the Dutch start-up Northern Wonder launched Coffee Free Coffee. The new product has the taste and smell of coffee, contains caffeine, and is even brewed the same way as regular coffee but does not contain any ingredients grown in a tropical environment. Northern Wonder has used patentable technology to successfully create a hot coffee product without coffee beans.

Back in 2019 we wrote about the startup Atomo from Seattle, they launched a similar product, molecular coffee made without coffee beans. They launched a cold brew in a can in August this year. This is made from date seeds, grape skin and chicory root and theine. Very different ingredients from those of Coffee Free Coffee. As colleagues, we discussed this product and we were very curious, fortunately we can now taste Coffee Free Coffee. And if you want to serve a real sustainable coffee in your coffee shop – we advise you to taste this product too!

IKEA Netherlands participates in ‘Eat No Animals Day’ and they are now also offering coffee with oat drink

From today on, 4^th of October, IKEA Netherlands is also offering customers and employees oat drink for their coffee. A cup of coffee at IKEA is well known to many – the free coffee for IKEA Family members attracts many extra visitors to the restaurants every day. By offering oat drink as an option alongside cow’s milk, the Swedish store wants to introduce as many people as possible to plant-based food and drinks in an approachable way. They are also taking part in ‘Eat No Animals Day’, an initiative by the Dutch foundation ‘Wakker Dier’ (Awake Animal). read more

Hutten and the Sign Language Coffee Bar join forces in the Netherlands

Hutten and the Sign Language Coffee Bar have entered into an exclusive collaboration in order to recruit more Gebaaristas, a self-created word in Dutch meaning a sign-ista (a hearing-impaired barista). The Sign Language Coffee Bar employs hearing-impaired baristas. The partnership is in line with Hutten’s policy to employ people with a distance to the labour market. “We both work from an intrinsic motivation to look at people’s talents instead of their limitations,” says Peter van den Bosch, general manager of Hutten.
