Claridge’s Afternoon Tea at the Maybourne Beverly Hills

For the first time in its 150 year history, Claridge’s legendary afternoon tea will be served outside of its Mayfair home, and will take residency at sister hotel The Maybourne Beverly Hills – the first American property from Maybourne Hotel Group. Guests will enjoy the traditional British teatime ritual, but with playful twists in true Maybourne spirit, that will reflect the flavours of California and the vibrancy of the destination. Presented on the LA hotel’s sweeping outdoor garden terrace, guests will enjoy this alfresco service surrounded by a white jacketed team, a fragrant garden of wild flowers, accompanied by the sounds of a grand piano.

Although it doesn’t sound like a trend, we love the idea of being able to enjoy a real British Afternoon Tea in another place. Would you go to a Dutch hotel if they would for example serve the delicious Claridge’s scones and their British style sandwiches? Or any of the Afternoon Tea’s we wrote about? We think collaborations like this could work at many more destinations!

The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam serves a classic Afternoon Tea as a tribute to the reopening of the Rijksmuseum. The menu consists entirely of pure traditional Dutch dishes like beef sausage burger with pickles, herring on rye bread and different types of croquettes.

Afternoon tea at The Berkeley London

The Berkeley London designer afternoon tea, Prêt-à-Portea, is inspired by the themes and colours of the fashion world. The menu is transformed every six months to follow the changing seasons in fashion. Prêt-à-Portea is served at the Caramel Room daily from 1pm to 6pm.

Coffeelicous is known in Holland as the winner of the ‘Koffie Top 100’ in 2014. They also own Hightealicious in Dordrecht (the Netherlands) where they serve fancy high teas. As far as we know, this is the only shop in the Netherlands that exclusively serves high teas. read more

Prêt-à-Portea delicacies with a fashionista twist

The Berkeley London has been serving a designer afternoon tea, Prêt-à-Portea, for almost 10 years. It’s inspired by the themes and colours of the fashion world. The menu follows the seasons in fashion, changing every six months. Hence, a tea with a perfectly worked out theme.

Although we already spotted the Prêt-à-Portea in 2007 and wrote about it back then, we never got to experience it first-hand. This tea is an inspiration for other hoteliers, merely because of the perfection of the theme which is amazing. Every detail is right: a shoe at the table as a ‘reserved’ sign, colourful and specially designed chinaware, a colourful menu with fashionable quotes, champagne of course, miniature savoury canapés, skewers and tea sandwiches followed by the specially designed sweets. Oh, and don’t forget the fashionable doggy bags!

A fashionista twist

The Autumn/Winter 2015-2016 Prêt-à-Portea collection takes inspiration from a lot of distinguished fashion designers. Taking centre stage is Dolce & Gabbana’s popular pink rose dress from their ground breaking ‘Viva La Mama’ collection, as seen on recent covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. This dress is translated in a yummy lychee and almond mousse, set upon pink pâte sablée topped with light pink chocolate and delicate rose detailing. The striped shoulder bag by Valentino tasted delicious as well, sponge cake with cranberry compote amidst multi-colour striped chocolate, finished with a golden handle.

Check out the website of The Berkeley for more details and if you’re in London, I would recommend to indulge yourself with a cozy, delicious tea here. ^Marjolein

The Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam serves an afternoon coffee, a new version of the famous classic afternoon tea. The executive chef Schilo van Coevorden has made a special menu for the afternoon coffee, with special coffee-food combinations. The courses are served with one of the most exclusive limited editions of Nespresso coffee, the ‘Hawaii Kona Special Reserve’. The beans for this coffee are grown in very small quantities on the slopes of the volcanoes in Hawaii, and is one of the most expensive coffees in the world. Some examples of the combinations; savory scones with tomato jam and Hawaiian Sunset (Grape Fruit, Passion Fruit, Rum and Olive Oil Pearls).
